Women’s Basketball Stumbles Late In Tough Battle To No. 6 Washington & Lee

Dunn matches career-high of 20 points despite falling short against nationally-recognized Generals.

GREENSBORO, N.C - The Guilford College women's basketball team (14-3, 5-3 ODAC) battled toe-to-toe against No. 6 nationally-ranked Washington & Lee University (17-0, 8-0 ODAC). After fighting hard against in-conference national talent, the Generals would ultimately storm back, stealing a key Quaker-possession late in the fourth quarter to result in a Washington & Lee victory, 81-78, on Jack Jensen Court inside the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse on Friday evening.

Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) matched her career-high of 20 points on the season, after logging 8-16 (50.0%) from the field, 3-5 (60.0%) from the three-point arc, and 1-3 (33.3%) from the free throw line. Dunn would have a solid performance defensively, collecting two steals and one block throughout the evening. Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) led the Quakers off her double-double with 23 points off of a dominating offensive performance shooting 11-21 (52.4%), with nine defensive rebounds, two blocks, and one steal snagged. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) created many looks for Guilford in her 10-point effort, shooting 4-18 (22.2%) from the field and 2-5 (40.0%) from the free throw line, with four defensive rebounds and three steals collected defensively. Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) displayed a solid night defensively, reeling in four steals and three defensive rebounds in her 8-point performance.

Mary Schleusner would command the evening for the nationally-ranked Generals, recording a double-double off 29 points from firing 10-17 (58.8%) from the field and 9-12 (75.0%) from the free-throw line. Schleusner would collect 29 rebounds in the process, 19 defensively, along with three blocks and one steal. Quinn McGuinness would follow-suit, driving Washington & Lee ahead in the high scoring affair from 18 points, shooting 7-10 (70.0%) from the field and 4-4 (100.0%) from the three-point line. Sarah Zimmerman would cruise defensively for the Generals, adding three blocks and three steals to her name on the night.

The game would tip-off with Washington & Lee establishing ground early after a back-and-forth scoring run for both teams, driven by McGuiness's two late threes to give the Generals a 30-23 lead after one quarter.

Guilford would roll into the second period, creating opportunities to strike from Giannopoulou and Markayla Massenburg's (Raleigh, N.C.) six-point scoring drive late in the quarter, to give the Quakers their first lead of the contest, 44-41, heading into the halftime break.

Guilford would maintain control through the beginning of the third, however being subdued from the powerful 16-point scoring run, with Schleusner logging 10 of those points to steer Washington & Lee back on top, 65-59, with ten minutes remaining in regulation.

The Quakers would rumble back into contention for the win off Giannopoulou's controlling 13-point final quarter, however that opportunity would subside off a late Walter foul to lock in the victory for Washington & Lee, 81-78.

Guilford will head back on the road for an ODAC-clash against Hollins University on Wednesday, January 28th inside Main Gymnasium. Tip-off begins at 7:00 PM
