Giannopoulou Reaches 1,000 as Women’s Basketball Triumphs at Hollins

Senior milestone highlights defensive road win for Quakers

ROANOKE, Va. — The Guilford College women's basketball team (15-3, 6-3 ODAC) responded with poise on Tuesday night, bouncing back from a narrow loss to sixth-ranked Washington & Lee with a 55-45 ODAC road victory over Hollins University (13-5, 5-4 ODAC) inside the Main Gymnasium.

Guilford dictated the tempo with disciplined defense and timely execution, holding Hollins to just 26.9 percent shooting from the field.

Senior forward Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) delivered a historic performance, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, while adding a game-high five steals. Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) fueled the offense with 14 points and three steals, while Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) anchored the interior with seven points and six boards. Karly Glahn (Charlotte, N.C.) and Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) each cleaned up the glass with seven rebounds apiece, rounding out a relentless defensive effort.

Hollins was paced by Jacorra Russell, who anchored the Hornets with a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists and four steals. Sarah Morales matched the double-digit scoring effort with 10 points and seven boards, while Zaria Holden followed closely with nine points and five rebounds.

Guilford set the tone early, opening the game with a 15-11 first-quarter advantage. A key moment came late in the period when Carmyn Claxton (Greenville, S.C.) pulled down a pair of clutch defensive rebounds to end a Hollins possession and halt the host's early momentum.

The Quakers extended their lead to 28-20 by halftime and continued to assert control in the third quarter, outscoring Hollins 14-5 to take a 42-25 advantage into the final period. Hollins attempted to rally in the fourth, but Guilford answered with composure. Giannopoulou's milestone basket at the 4:53 mark effectively sealed the outcome, 55-45.

The Quakers return home to the Ragan-Brown Field House on Friday, January 30th, to host Shenandoah University in another important ODAC matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
