DANVILLE, Va. — The Guilford College women's basketball team (14-2, 5-2 ODAC) continued its strong conference surge on Wednesday night, defeating Averett University (6-9, 2-5 ODAC) by a 76-57 final at the Grant Center.
Guilford controlled the game with balanced scoring and consistent interior play, holding the Cougars to 27.4% shooting from the field. The Quakers also capitalized on second-chance opportunities and defensive pressure, forcing 20 turnovers and converting them into 19 points.
Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) delivered an extraordinary performance, pouring in a career-high 28 points on 10-for-16 shooting while adding 12 rebounds, three steals, and five blocks in a dominant double-double showing.
Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.) provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting, while
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) followed with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Taylor Dunn (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) chipped in eight points apiece, rounding out a collective Quaker effort.
Averett was led by DaiShaundria Giggetts, who finished with 25 points and four steals. Crishya Sellers added eight points and eight rebounds, while Jy'Lyia Mizell scored six points off the bench for the Cougars.
The Quakers set the tone early, taking an 18-16 lead after the first quarter. Guilford built momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Averett 17-12 to take a 35-28 advantage into halftime.
Guilford continued to assert control in the third quarter, opening the half with a three-pointer by Scott and stretching the lead to double digits. Giannopoulou dominated the paint during the period, scoring 11 points in the frame as the Quakers entered the fourth quarter ahead 54-42.
The Quakers put the game away in the final ten minutes, outscoring Averett 22-15. A key sequence came midway through the quarter when
Hannah Ajayi (Chapel Hill, N.C.) threaded a pass to George for a layup, pushing the Guilford lead to 12 and halting any Cougar momentum. Guilford would go on to build its largest lead of the night at 22 points before closing out the 76-57 road victory.
The Quakers return home on Friday, January 23, welcoming No. 6 Washington & Lee University to Ragan-Brown Field House for a pivotal ODAC matchup. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
