Berry’s PK Grants Women’s Soccer Draw With Methodist in Rough-And Tumble Bout

Quakers and Monarchs combine for just eight shots on goal in physical, chippy affair

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With a penalty kick strike off the right foot of Kylie Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) in the 84th minute, the Guilford College women's soccer team (2-0-1, 0-0-0 ODAC) were able to muster a breakeven verdict against Methodist University (0-0-2, 0-0-0 USA South), 1-1, on Wednesday night at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.

Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) made her Appenzeller Field debut, and was solid permitting one goal against two stops on the seven total sent her way to move to 1-0-1 in frame this fall. Kaylea Carter was really good for the Monarchs, however, aggressive and commanding in and out of the box, she conceded one goal against a quartet of saves while seeing 14 shots against her to move to 0-0-1.

Berry was the Quaker goal scorer on the night, but the hosts got some great minutes out of a plethora of contributors including Keeli Crisco (Albermarle, N.C.), Kylie Muse (Browns Summit, N.C.), and Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.). The same was the case for Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) who had an impactful night with two shots, one on net while Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) paced GC in shots with four.

Brynn Ludka had more than half of the Monarch shots and shots on frame with four and two respectively, but it was Allye Carter who made her one shot on target count with a goal. Emy Cloutier added an assist for MU.

This one began with an extended period of the adversaries just feeling things out with just a small handful of uncompetitive shots before Methodist opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Carter and Cloutier worked a little give-and-go action down the center of the pitch, but well beyond the 18', in what looked like a pretty harmless play. The trouble became that Lis had extended off her line, and Carter took advantage of the out-of-position Quaker keeper, chipping a floating shot over her into top-left of the twine for MU's first tally of the young season.

The first half finished quietly, but Guilford began to assert control in the second half of play. Parker got a couple of nice looks and later Kahre sent a great ball into the box that Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) redirected, requiring a diving stop by the Kaylea Carter. All the while, the already physical match was devolving into a slugfest physically.

All that set the stage for Berry, as in the 84th minute, Daphne Paleocrassas got caught tripping Parker within the confines of the 18'. The junior Quaker stepped to the line and buried her free look into the bottom-right of the net to level the score and that is ultimately where things would remain in a 1-1 draw.

Guilford begins a lengthy stretch of contests away from Appenzeller Field next when they head to Raleigh to play Meredith College next Wednesday, September 10th for a 4:00 PM match.
