RALEIGH, N.C. – Heading to the Meredith Athletic Field and Track Complex to battle Meredith University (0-4-1, 0-0-0 USA South), the Guilford College women's soccer team (3-0-1, 0-0-0 ODAC) once again held the opposition to single-digit shot attempts and three or fewer looks on frame to complete their third clean sheet of the campaign, 2-0, on Wednesday evening.
The win is their fourth-straight over the Avenging Angels as GC improved to a 3-0-1 start or better for the fifth-consecutive year, the longest stretch of such beginnings in program history.
Improving to 2-0-0 when tending the Quakers' net,
Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) had to earn her clean sheet this time, making a pair of saves on the nine total sent her way by the hosts. Carter Knox got her first start of the season for the Avenging Angels, finishing with 12 saves on the 24 shots put in her direction.
Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) netted her first collegiate game-winner in the contest with
Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) later adding an extra tally on one of her five shots, and game-high four shots on goal for GC.
Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) and
Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) were awarded helpers on the night while
Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) led all players with eight shots.
Kathryn Angrave, Grace Ensign, and Lucy Miller all took two shots for MC in the match with the former being the only one of them to have a shot on target. Ellie Heney was credited with Meredith's only other shot on goal.
The cardinal and grey got on the attack swiftly, maintaining early pressure on the Meredith backline and ultimately it would only require five shots for them to find paydirt. In the 16
th minute of play, Yates was able to hit
Ashlyn Miller to tap home a tally into the bottom-left of the net for the junior's first goal of the campaign.
Maintaining their attack to the tune of a 14-5 edge in shots, including 7-2 in shots on goal, in the first half of play, Guilford would only be able to breakthrough on that one occasion over the opening 45.
Finally cashing in with insurance in the 57
th minute, the Quakers got it after Kahre navigated the center of the offensive zone before distributing to Parker on the left wing. She got north, approached the top-left of the 18' and fired a picturesque shot just over the hands of the leaping keeper and into the right side of the net for her first goal of the year.
All the while, the GC defense held-serve, preventing a shot on frame in the second half to preserve the shutout in front of Motto and finish the 2-0 win.
Guilford waits another week before hitting the pitch again to clash with Greensboro College in the final matchup of the crosstown rivalry this fall season. First kick on Wednesday, September 17
th is set for 7:00 PM at Pride Field.
