Women’s Soccer Sports Plenty of Offense, Another Clean Sheet In Victory Over Averett

Johnson nets first-career game-winner in non-conference clash with ODAC foe

DANVILLE, Va. – Holding the opposition, this time Averett University (1-4-1, 0-0-0 ODAC), to single-digits in shots for the sixth-consecutive match, the Guilford College women's soccer team (4-0-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) got their offense going on Saturday night at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium, coming home with a 3-0 victory in non-conference action.

Still yet to concede a goal over her three appearances this season, Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) did set an early-career-high with three saves on the six shots sent her direction to improve to 3-0-0. Tia Chrons was peppered with 28 shot attempts for AU, making 11 saves against three goals permitted in the losing effort to drop to 0-3-0.

Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) lit the spark of the Guilford offense, netting her first-career game-winning tally on her lone shot attempt. Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) also pitched in a score in reserve with Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) later adding an insurance goal. Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) provided the helper on the first two Quaker goals while Sarah Bain (Haymarket, Va.) led all players with five shots.

Delaney Haymore was the lone Cougar with multiple shot attempts on the night, getting one on-frame. The other four AU shots were evenly dispersed over four players with Madie Pedraza and Isabella Kelly each getting a look at the frame.

Guilford pitched a tent in their offensive zone in the game's early stages, before they finally broke through in the 26th minute. Ashlyn Miller worked from the left wing to center-pitch before swinging a pass the Johnson, on the right wing. The senior then attacked the space afforded by the Cougar backline, getting inside the 18' off the left post and ripped a shot back across the crease with her right foot, = under the diving Chrons for her second tally of the year.

The hosts would muster their only two shots of the half over the ensuing minutes, but GC would tack on a second tally in the 37th minute of play. Applying great pressure, albeit with lots of congestion in the offensive zone, Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) threw her foot in front of, and knocked down a clear attempt deep in Averett territory, with the ball rolling right to the feet of Miller. She would thread a pass between defenders to her sister, Sarah Miller who got it just beyond top-right corner of the 6', going bottom-right for her second goal of the fall.

Into the second half, the Quaker pressure continued to wreak havoc, and in the 59th minute, it caused a misfired pass by a Cougar defender deep in their own territory. Brown aggressively pursued the free ball into the AU 18', breaking the opposition's backline, then got a shot from beyond the right post, beating the keeper, who was off her line, to the top-middle for her first goal of the campaign, bringing the tallies to their final of 3-0.

Guilford will hit the road one last time on this elongated stretch away from Appenzeller Field, heading to Charlotte to battle Johnson & Wales University for a 6:00 PM contest on Monday, September 22nd.
