PINEVILLE, N.C. – Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) came up clutch, finishing a 72
nd minute goal sending the Guilford College women's soccer team (5-0-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) home victorious again, 2-1, on Monday night over Johnson & Wales (N.C.) University (4-4-0, 0-0-0 C2C) at the OthoCarolina Sportsplex.
Conceding one goal,
Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) also made one save for the Quakers to improve to 2-0-2 on the season after facing three total shots. The Wildcats divided goaltending duties between Zoe Balmer and Allison Bryman as they faced 15 Quaker shots between them. Balmer made one save against one goal in the first half before giving way to Bryman who made two stops but permitted the game-winner in her collegiate debut to fall to 0-1-0.
Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) was the other Guilford goal-scorer on the evening, netting one of her four shot attempts. Berry buried the go-ahead score among her six shots, four on goal, for GC, with her tally being her first game-winner since her freshman season.
Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) contributed the assist for Berry's goal while
Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) attempted a pair of shots.
Olivia Kieffer scored the solo Wildcat tally, assisted by Emily Spies. Hannah Greene was the only other player able to muster a shot on-target for the hosts.
Maintaining pressure early, the first Quaker goal would come on their seventh shot attempt of the evening. Receiving a throw-in along the right sideline, Kahre swiftly maneuvered towards center-pitch, getting to the top of the 18' on the right wing. With some daylight, she got a left-footed shot off, finding twine in the upper-middle portion of the net for her first goal of the year in the 28
th minute.
The advantage would not sustain for very long, however, as in the 35
th minute, Johnson & Wales had an answer. Using the Guilford score as an offensive catalyst for themselves, the hosts worked deep into their offensive end. JWU used a couple pass-backs to better position themselves with the ball making its' way to Spies on the right wing. Flipping the field with a high, arching pass to the opposite side of the 18', Spies beautifully led Kieffer who beat her mark and redirected the ball past Lis and into the bottom-right of the net for her second goal of the fall.
Remaining equal through the remainder of the first half and much of the second, the stalemate was finally broken in the 72
nd minute. Drawing a foul deep in Wildcats territory along the boundary, the Quakers were granted a quasi-corner kick, albeit about 10 yards off the end line, and they took advantage. Yates sent a beautiful ball into the crease, finding the head of Berry who expertly used her noggin for the go-ahead tally and third goal of the season. The defense took care of the rest and GC returns to their home turf still without a defeat on the season, following a 2-1 win.
Guilford finally makes their return to Appenzeller Field on Wednesday, September 24
th, playing host to North Carolina Wesleyan University for a 7:00 PM match.
