Women’s Soccer Battles To Scoreless Draw In Crosstown Clash With Greensboro

Defenses set the tone in hard-fought rivalry bout

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the final Battle for the 'Boro of the fall season, the Guilford College women's soccer team (3-0-2, 0-0-0 ODAC) fought to a scoreless breakeven result, 0-0, against Greensboro College (3-2-2, 0-0-0 USA South) on Wednesday evening at Pride Field.

Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) made some high-quality plays despite only being challenged to the tune of two shots, both on frame, and shed saved those with ease to move to 1-0-2 on the season. Shyann Hansen got the nod for the hosts seeing seven shots in her direction with three saves resulting to advance to 3-2-2.

By initial count, only a pair of players had multiple shots in the game, one was Kylie Berry (Kernersville, N.C.), who had one look on goal, and the other was Emily Parker (Lillington, N.C.) who played a really strong all-around game with some great sustained offensive pressure from the wing and a couple of fine defensive efforts as well. Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) and Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) were the other Quakers with a shot on target.

The Pride were only credited with a pair of shot attempts, both on goal, off the feet of Alex Dawson and Makenzie Taylor.

The opening 45 minutes of play saw plenty of high-intensity action as the rivals traded spurts of sustained attack, but without any scoring to show from it. Among the seven combined shots, five of which were by Quakers, only four were on target, evenly split two aside. Greensboro got both of their on-frame looks in the 28th minute of play with the first of those looks by Dawson providing a touch of a threat but Lis handled it with ease. Guilford, generally upheld the more consistent pressure but their top run did not come until the 40th minute when a wonderful through ball threaded the needle of a compact Pride backline. The result was a one-on-one chance for Miller who tried the bottom-right of the frame but Hansen was up to the task.

Come the second half of play, the visiting GC seized command of the tempo, dominating possession and potential chances but stout defense sustained. Guilford got a pair of opportune looks with free kicks from great locations, around 35 yards out and in the center third of the pitch, but nothing came of either chance. Greensboro got a great opportunity in the 88th minute, with Dawson breaking loose following a brief breakdown on the backline. However, a terrific read by Lis saw her close the gap and make a diving block near the top of the box to maintain the clean sheet.

The Quakers hit the road again on Saturday evening to battle an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe in an non-conference bout when they clash with Averett University on September 20th beginning at 6:00 PM in Danville.
