STAUNTON, Va. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-3-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) was on-point in their strong offensive performance from start to finish on Saturday afternoon against Mary Baldwin University (1-4-1, 0-0-0 USA South), flying victorious, 5-1, at SMA Worth Field.
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) held all the workload for the Quakers in goal, scooping-up three saves against one goal conceded on four shot attempts, ending the match with the win, improving his record to 2-2-0. Mary Baldwin's keeper, Tucker Speak, corralled three saves against five goals conceded on a peppering 12 shots faced, dropping his record to 0-3-1 on the season.
Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) dominated in goal-scoring in the afternoon making the Fighting Squirrels defense look silly with two goals on four shot attempts, three being on goal.
Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) would follow-suit for the Quakers in their superb offensive execution in the match with one goal on off of three shot-attempts, all being on-goal.
Chris Hercules (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Demetrio Candela-Habana (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each added to Guilford's total with an additional goal scored from both players.
The Fighting Squirrels opened the scoring in the game with an Isiah Williams goal off of his lone shot attempt, assisted by Edward Headley. Mary Baldwin's offensive production was shut-down as Chase Arrington had two shot-attempts, both being on goal. Chase Taylor also made a minimal contribution with one shot attempt, that was on goal.
The Fighting Squirrels began the scoring early in the afternoon match absorbing through the Quaker defensive front with the Williams goal in the low-right corner, assisted by Headley in the fourth minute.
A spark would heat up the Quakers offensive performance with an on-point goal from Garbia in the high-center portion of the net, assisted by
Jeremy Pless (Titusville, Fla.) in the 14th minute. An electric closing in the first-half to the Guilford goal-scoring in the 25th minute off of a P.K. by Hercules drawn by a Mary Baldwin yellow card.
The Quakers would hold their ground at the start of the second half from Candela-Habana's second goal of the season in the low-left corner of the net, assisted by Pless in the 73rd minute of play. Both Garbia's would eye-victory for Guilford with an unassisted goal scored by each of them in the 76th and 89th minutes of play.
Although several fouls and yellow cards were drawn by the aggressive Fighting Squirrels defense, they would ultimately be subdued to Guilford's dominance on the offensive front, resulting in a 5-1 decision in favor of the Quakers.
The Quakers will be back in action on Friday, September 19th, at 7:00 PM to begin four-straight home matches, first being against Johnston & Wales College of Charlotte (N.C.) at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
