Men’s Soccer Fights the Wildcats to a Scoreless Draw Under the Lights

Both teams' offensive fronts were shut down due to strong performances defensively from start to finish.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-3-1, 0-0-0 ODAC) fought for any scoring opportunities they could obtain on Friday evening against Johnson & Wales University of Charlotte (N.C.) (2-4-2, 0-0-0 C2C), unfortunately not striking from the distance, resulting in a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes of play at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.

Chris Kelley (Lexington, N.C.) held strong from start to finish for the Quakers in goal, reeling in two saves on six shot attempts, drawing the tie at the buzzer bringing his record to 1-0-1. Johnson & Wales's (N.C.) keeper, Jackson Acker, scooped up three saves on eight shots faced, finishing with the draw bringing his record to 1-2-1 on the season.

Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) was on top for Guilford's offensive performance this evening with three shot attempts, two being on goal. Nathan Pless (Titusville, Fla.) would follow suit with his lone shot attempt being on the mark as a shot on goal. Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) would leave his mark on the box score as well with two shot attempts on the night. Dani Santos (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.) made their offensive contribution with a shot attempt each.

Johnson & Wales (N.C.) didn't follow suit on their scoring opportunities as Ashton Smith and Paul Abril each contributed to one shot-on-goal each. The Quaker defense would subdue additional chances at a goal for the Wildcats with Justin Ortiz, Eugenio de la Parra Polina, Carlos Gonzalez Zepeda, and Lucas Lech each were off the mark in their shot attempt.

The game would kickoff with both sides being defensively superb with multiple shot attempts being scooped up by both goalies. Things would get feisty after multiple fouls and yellow cards would be drawn throughout the half.

After multiple corner chances by the Quakers, the first half would wrap up scoreless with both sides being chippy for possession to get their team on the board for the first time in the match.

Guilford would hit the ground running after getting shots off from Wildcat fouls drawn early, however being corralled by dominant goalie play by Johnson & Wales (N.C.). Both teams would fight for a chance at glory in the match with a peppering of fouls and yellow cards being drawn.

With a great fight from beginning to end in the game, the strong-minded Wildcat defense would block any chance at a Quaker goal on the offensive front, resulting in a 0-0 draw for both teams.

The Quakers will be back in action on Sunday, September 21st, at 11:00 AM to continue their streak of home games, against Sewanee University at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
