GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jacob Mills (Culpeper, Va.),
Darius Safavi-Abbassi (Culver City, Calif.), and
Cam Walters (Greensboro, N.C.) were selected to represent the Guilford College men's lacrosse team on the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.
Lacrosse is a sport that falls under the CSC's at-large program for Academic All-District recognition. In order to qualify for the honor in lacrosse, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, a nominee must have competed in 90% of the team's total games played, or start in 66% of the team's total games. No more than ten student-athletes may be an at-large nominee per school per gender.
Entering the Guilford starting-ten this season fulltime, Mills enjoyed a tremendously successful second spring in the cardinal and grey. Starting all 18 games, he finished fifth on the team in points, with 20, via 16 goals, also fifth-most, and four assists. Super-effective on special teams, his four man-up tallies paced the team. In addition, Mills forced a trio of turnovers and secured 17 groundballs. Studying Economics at GC, he is a sophomore owning a 3.92 GPA.
While his goals against average would suggest regression, Safavi-Abbassi really had a breakout junior year in net for the Quakers. Starting all 18 contests in net, he played 787 minutes with a 13.87 GAA that is frankly inflated by a handful of difficult contests. What the junior did do, however, was secure an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Defensive Player of the Week nod for a week of brilliant showings against Averett and, more notably, Bridgewater, a game in which he posted an outstanding .783 save percentage. Sending back shots at a .497 rate on the whole, Safavi-Abbassi ranked 140
th in the nation in that category on his way to a 5-12 record. Double-major in Sport Management and Business Administration, the junior owns a 3.92 GPA and is a second-time Academic All-District honoree.
Also a second-time Academic All-District pick, Walters played and started in all 18 of the team's games this season as a defenseman. He did tally five goals and one assist on the season across 13 shot attempts and he further proved his selflessness and versatility by spending some time in the faceoff circle, although he won just ten of the 55 draws he took part of, the third-most on the team. He was an impact defender, however, forcing 17 turnovers, the third-highest total on the squad. He also had a nose for the ball, corralling 42 groundballs, the fourth-most among field players for GC. Academically, Walters has a 3.75 GPA in the Guilford Economics program.
