GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (2-6, 0-2 ODAC) could not find traction, falling in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action to Shenandoah University (4-3, 1-0 ODAC), 23-3, on Saturday afternoon at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
While turnovers and clears each had narrow margins, the Quakers had a really difficult time on the draw, getting outdone 24-5 leading to a 38-10 margin in shot attempts including 29-9 in shots on target.
Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) did not stand much of a chance against the onslaught of shots sent her way, making six saves against 23 goals permitted over all 60:00 minutes of game time to take the defeat and fall to 1-3. Madison Perry opened the contest in frame for the guests and faced three shots, all of them on target, over the first 15 minutes of the game, allowing one goal against two saves and ended up in line for the win to improve to 3-3. Maddie Gaboury played the second frame for the guests making a save and allowing one goal before Jordan Higgins closed things out in the second half with one goal against with three saves.
Maggie Hartnett (Oxford, Maine) led GC with a pair of goals while adding two caused turnovers and two groundballs.
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) scored the other GC tally on a free-position look, adding two draw controls.
Brenna Holden (Kernersville, N.C.) finished tied for the team lead with a pair of groundballs while both
Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) had assists for the hosts.
SU had 13 different players find paydirt with Ainsley Buckner leading the way with four goals on top of a brilliant showing on the draw with 19 controls by herself. Alex Ripkin had three goals and an assist with Alyssa Webster spliting her four points evenly between goals and helpers. Sarah Karlinchak was their primary distributer with three assists on top of a goal.
Buckner wasted little time making her presence felt, winning the opening draw and going right down to score just 74 seconds in and then Amy Bell added another for SU just under two minutes later. Ripkin scored on a free-position, Karlinchak netted one and then Addison Harmel and Ayla Jantz got in on the fun in the ensuing minutes before the Quakers broke through. Getting fouled by Emma Amundson, DeFeo capitalized on a free-position opportunity, firing her shot into the right side of the net mid-height for her ninth goal of the season.
The Hornets opened the second with a tally courtesy of Kaitlin Clements before Guilford got on the board again. Wood operated from the left corner of arch and fed a pass to a cutting Hartnett directly in front of the cage and the graduate student went high-right side for her 12
th goal of the year. Unfortunately, SU dominated the rest of the way, piling up seven unanswered scores to get to running clock before the half's conclusion.
Opening the second half, Buckner scored the opening goal before GC finally ended their drought with a Harnett goal off a Garland feed. SU would score the final three goals of the third then all four tallies in the fourth, bringing the final score to 23-3.
The Quakers host crosstown rival, Greensboro College next at Appenzeller Field. First draw for the rivalry clash will be 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 25.
