GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's lacrosse team (3-6, 0-2 ODAC) rocked the competition in their non-conference matchup against Greensboro College (1-8, 0-4 USA South), 19-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
The Quakers came out hot, winning the opening draw and scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game, extending their run and taking control early by torching their opponents with five goals in five minutes. Guilford clutched 17-25 on draw controls, eclipsing the Pride 41-16 in shot attempts and 30-9 in shots on goal.
Sammy Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) did not let the green get much past her, posting a solid performance in goal with eight saves on 16 shot attempts faced, only allowing four goals to go by to improve to 2-3. Carly Wenton got the start in goal for Greensboro, but did not last long after giving up a quick four goals early on and ended up on the hook for the loss to fall to 0-4. D'Kayla Thomasson took over in net, but her 13 saves were not nearly enough to lessen the damage done by the Quakers.
Maggie Hartnett (Oxford, Maine) left her mark with five goals and four assists, fast-breaking on offense and causing a single turnover.
Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) followed along with five goals of her own, adding three caused turnovers and one assist to the mix.
Carm DeFeo (Shelton, Conn.) got it done, scoring on five-of-six shots on goal.
Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) rounded out the team effort with three goals, two assists, and two turnovers while also controlling the circle with a game-high seven draw controls.
The Pride got singular goals from Regan Dailey, Brynly ManWaring, Rosanna Espinosa-Pon, and Keira Fenyo. Fenyo was the only one of that bunch to record a helper on the day.
DeFeo was the first to score, winning the draw and driving downfield for her tenth goal of the season. Garland added to make it a pair for the Quakes a minute later. Heating up quickly, Gravley scored back-to-back to reach her own tenth for the season off the draw and ground ball pickup. The impressive offensive drive in the first half put the Quakers up big.
Greensboro struggled all afternoon to get going offensively, allowing the Quakers eight goals before they could even put up one. With 2:33 to go in the first quarter, Fenyo scored her only goal of the day off the free-position attempt to finally put the Pride on the board. ManWaring scored with five minutes left in the first half following the ground ball pickup by Dailey. The Pride would only score twice more in the third quarter, a pair shot by Espinosa-Pon.
The fourth quarter remained silent for Greensboro, as Espinosa-Pon shot three times and was denied by all three saves from Keene. The heavy offense from the Quakers never let up. Hartnett added to the devastation with a goal late in the game and another off a turnover in the final seconds, putting the final score at 19-4 for a Quaker triumph over their cross-town rivals.
The Quakers are back on their home turf Saturday, March 29 at 3:00 PM for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup against Bridgewater College.
