GREENSBORO, N.C. — In their first ODAC contest of the year, the Guilford College women's basketball team (6-0, 1-0 ODAC) surged to their best season opening since 2019-20, edging out Roanoke College (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) 63-60 on Wednesday night inside Ragan-Brown Field House. The Quakers led for over 29 minutes of play and held strong through a high-energy fourth quarter push to remain unbeaten on the year.
Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) once again led Guilford offensively, recording a season-high 23 points on 10-for-19 shooting, while adding eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a standout performance.
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) was electric across both halves, finishing with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including three makes from deep, paired with seven rebounds and three steals.
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) added a season-high 12 points and seven boards of her own, while
Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) facilitated the offense with a match-high six assists and four points.
Roanoke's Paige Breuer scored a team-leading 22 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while Alicea Farmer posted 15 points and 12 rebounds — one of the key forces behind the Maroons' late surge.
Guilford opened with rhythm, winning the tip and striking inside with early baskets from Scott and Massenburg to take a 4-0 lead. Steady defensive pressure and second-chance points helped the Quakers close the first quarter ahead 17-13, fueled by Scott's early presence on the glass and a confident interior attack.
A key three-pointer from
Karly Glahn (Charlotte, N.C.), a clutch rebound by
Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.), and a timely steal by
Ja'Kiyah Moore (Knightdale, N.C.), sparked momentum in the second, extending the Guilford lead as the Quakers pushed ahead before heading into halftime up 33-26.
Roanoke responded aggressively out of the break, catching momentum from beyond the arc and flipping the lead late in the third, entering the fourth quarter ahead 48-47.
Scott drilled a high-impact transition three to make it 52-50, and Massenburg answered on the next possession with a strong take inside to keep Guilford alive during the back-and-forth final minutes. Key defensive stops and late free-throw execution helped the Quakers outscore Roanoke 16-12 in the final frame, sealing a gritty, wire-tight 63-60 finish and pushing the undefeated streak to six straight games to open the season.
The Quakers return home on Saturday, December 6, hosting ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite University inside Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
