SWANNANOA, N.C - Led by
Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece), the Guilford College women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 ODAC) rolled into numerous scoring possessions, driving past Warren Wilson College (0-5, 0-1 C2C), 79-61, inside the Devries Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.
Hitting a season high of 12 rebounds, Giannopoulou rolled through the Owls defensive front. Giannopoulou commanded the Quakers on offense throughout the night, shooting 6-14 (42.9%) from the field, 3-4 (75%) from the three-point line, and 3-4 (75.0%) from the free-throw line, leading to an 18-point performance. Giannopoulou matched a career-mark in four blocks defensively, going along with one steal, and a career-high of seven assists.
Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.),
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.), and
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) each landed solid performances throughout the clash. George wrapped up the night firing 5-9 (55.6%) from the field and 1-3 (33.3%) from the three-point line. George would match her career-best in seven rebounds, going along with one assist, three turnovers, and one steal, for a 12-point contribution. Massenburg would command flawlessly shooting inside the three-point arch, landing 5-11 (45.5%) of her shots with six rebounds and a career-mark of four assists. Massenburg would torch the Warren Wilson offense, creating three turnovers, and landing a career-high in six steals, recording an 11-point performance. Scott would continue her offensive-success against the Owls, launching 4-10 (40%) from the field, 1-1 (100.0%) on her three-pointers, and snagging nine rebounds for 10-points in the match.
Ori Galloway led the charge for Warren Wilson, finishing with 28-points on the evening. Galloway would fire 12-24 (50.0%) from the field, with one block and two steals on defense. Tatyana Lewis, established possible scoring chances for the Owls throughout the match with her team-leading 12 rebounds.
The game would tip-off with the Quakers off to a roaring start, hitting a 14-5 scoring drive midway through the first period. Giannopoulou and Massenburg ran the momentum in Guilford's favor off converting from the field, leading the Quakers to a 30-15 start through 10 minutes of regulation.
Galloway's career-best performance would cause the climb of the Owls on the leaderboard. However,
Taylor Dunn's (Charlotte, N.C.) dominant defensive performance would steer Guilford towards extending their lead, 48-29, heading into halftime.
The scoring would seize momentarily in the third period with numerous turnovers on both sides of the ball.
Markayah Johnson's (Baltimore, Md.) conversions in the field and drawing fouls off Warren Wilson's miscues would keep the Quakers in the game, leading 59-45 with ten minutes remaining.
The Owls would inch closer towards Guilford for their first lead throughout the night, however their offense would be subdued after late Warren Wilson fouls, drawn and converted by
Karly Glahn (Charlotte, N.C.), resulting in a Quakers victory, 79-61.
Guilford will get a brief break throughout Thanksgiving, before getting back at it against cross-town rivals Greensboro College on Monday, December 1st inside the First Horizon Coliseum. Tip-off will commence at 5:30 PM.
