Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Brevard in Nail-Biting Clash

Scott and George both hit career-bests in double-digit points throughout tight-knit affair.

GREENSBORO, N.C - Guilford College women's basketball team (3-0, 0-0 ODAC) battled closely, yet flourished in the final moments against Brevard College (2-1, 0-0 USA South), winning 72-70, on Jack Jensen Court in the Ragan-Brown Field House on Monday evening.

Briahna Scott (Graham, NC) and Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.) cruised for the Quakers hitting their season and career-bests in points as the lone players for Guilford hitting the double-digit point mark on the night, leading to the Quakers fourth-straight 3-0 start to the season.

Scott led Guilford with 19 points, shooting 5-17 (29.4%) from the field, 1-5 (25.0%) from the three-point line, and 8-10 (80%) on her free-throws. Scott would wrap up the night as a heavy scoring contributor on both sides of the ball, snagging 10 rebounds on five assists, going along with her three steals and two blocks defensively. George hit numerous career-bests in 12 points, shooting 5-8 (62.5%) from the field, 1-1 (100%) at the three-point line, and launching 4-4 (100%) in her free-throws at the net. George hit career-highs defensively as well marking seven rebounds along with one block and three steals. Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) and Ja'Kiyah Moore (Knightsdale, N.C.) would each display consistent performances throughout the night. Walter would fire 2-5 (40.0%) at the three-point line, going along with four steals and three blocks. Moore would hit her career-bests in field-goal percentage, shooting 3-8 (37.5%) and 2-2 on free-throws, going along with one steal.

Brevard's leading scorer, Analee Morris, featured 23 points on the night from shooting 9-13 (62.5%) from the field and 4-5 (80%) on her three-pointers. Olivia Miller would follow-suit with an 18-point performance on the night, launching 9-10 (90%) from the field, going along with 11 rebounds and two steals. Jada-Petty Wilkins was the remaining double-digit point scorer for the Tornandos with 11 points, shooting 4-19 (21.1%) from the field with seven rebounds.

The game would tip-off and start slowly for the Quakers as Brevard cruised in scoring, shooting 8-13 (61.5%) from the field and 3-5 (60%) from the three-point line to dominate in the opening quarter leading 23-10.

Guilford would slowly climb back in the second period, going on a 24-19 point run in the quarter off-the back of the scoring by Hannah Ajayi (Chapel Hill) and Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) late in the period. The Quakers would go into the half, down eight, 42-34.

The third period would open with numerous scoring conversions off the back of Scott and George's career-best night, causing Guilford to take their first lead of the night, up 55-52 heading into the final period.

Although Brevard would fight back with power late, creating many scoring chances to tie the game 68-68 with one-minute to go, Guilford would prevail off the game-sealing points by Massenburg, winning 72-70, marking the Quakers third-straight win over the Tornados.

The Quakers will wrap up their November-slate on the road against Warren Wilson College on Wednesday, November 19th inside the Devries Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
