BUENA VISTA, Va. – Guilford College women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 ODAC) traveled up north this afternoon to face non-conference foe Southern Virginia University (0-2, 0-0 USA SOUTH). The game would be back-and-forth for most of the way on both sides of the ball. Ultimately, due to foul miscues by the Knights late, the Quakers were able to pull away through free-throw and field goal makes to slide by Southern Virginia, 80-71, inside Knight Arena on Saturday evening.
This win will cement the Quakers second-straight win against Southern Virginia in the history of the institution. This performance will also be marked as Guilford's second-straight performance logging 80 points or more against the Knights.
Julianna Walter (Taylorsville, N.C.) and
Briahna Scott (Graham, N.C.) each held their ground in displaying their season highs in 18 points on the season. Walter would cruise offensively to launch 5-9 (55.6%) from the field and lead the Quakers in three-point makes, shooting 2-3 (66.7%) from that mark. Walter locked a career-high in nine steals defensively, contributing to Guilford receiving numerous scoring opportunities late in the game. Scott would also display a strong offensive showing, launching 4-8 (50.0%) from the field and 9-10 (90%) from the free-throw line, leading the squad in this category.
Anna Giannopoulou (Athens, Greece) provided Guilford with a solid performance of her own, finishing with 12 points, shooting 5-12 (41.7%) from the field, and dominating the paint defensively with eight rebounds, two takeaways, and two steals.
Abigail Snyder dominated offensively for the Knights throughout the evening, finishing with a team-leading 25 points, launching 8-20 (40.0%) from the field, drawing 4-8 (50%) of her three pointers, showing close to perfection in finishing 5-6 (83.3%) on her free throws, and capping that off with four steals and 10 takeaways on the night. Aysia Foster and Kensey Peterson follow-suit with consistent showings offensively for Southern Virginia, putting up 14 and 11 points respectively and finishing 5-8 (62.5%) and 4-5 (80%) shooting from the field.
The game would tip off and begin very defensive-minded as both teams would begin with difficulties in scoring due to numerous turnovers. Southern Virginia would go on a 11 point run led by Peterson and Foster to go up 16-8 over Guilford after the first period.
The Quakers would go on to quadruple their point total after the second period.
Evelyn George (Hillsborough, N.C.) wrapped the second period for the Quakers up on a high note, sending 2-2 (100%) shots from the field into the net along with two assists to tie up the ball game at 32 points a piece heading into the half.
Markayla Massenburg (Raleigh, N.C.) brought her energy into Guilford's positive momentum heading into the third period, sending a stellar 3-3 (100.0%) shots from the field.
Hannah Ajayi (Chapel Hill, N.C.) would keep the tradition going with another 3-3 (100%) shooting performance in the period to drive the Quakers momentum up, putting them on top 51-48 over the Knights heading into the final ten minutes of play.
Although the Knights were able to hit an abundance of three-pointers late led by Foster and Anna Kimball, the momentum steered in Guilford's favor as Walter and Scott had their best performances of the year shooting from the field and the three-point line. This result would go towards Guilford's favor, defeating Southern Virginia, 80-71.
The Quakers are back on the court again on Monday, November 17th as they are back at home to take on Brevard College at Jack Jensen Court inside the Raegen Brown Fieldhouse. Tip off commences at 7:00 PM.
