ROANOKE, Va. – The Guilford College volleyball team (17-8, 6-5 ODAC) picked up two victories Saturday at the Hollins University Tri-Match, sweeping the host Hollins (9-15, 0-10 ODAC), (25-20, 25-15, 25-12) before defeating Johnson & Wales (6-20, 1-2 C2C) in four sets, 25-15, 19-25, 25-10, 25-15. The day was highlighted by senior
Natalie Moore (Talbott, Tenn.), who recorded her 1,000th career kill during the third set against Hollins, becoming just the fourth player in program history to achieve the milestone. The win over Hollins secured Guilford a winning conference record for the second straight season and punched the Quakers' ticket to the ODAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed.
GAME ONE
Guilford opened the day with a 3-0 win over Hollins, taking sets by scores of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-12.
Chrisbel Alcantara (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Quakers with 16 kills on a .483 hitting percentage, while
Madison Duvall (Sophia, N.C.) tallied four blocks, and
Jillian Mapes (Hodges, S.C.) dished out 33 assists as Guilford hit .347 as a team. Defensively,
Vivian Cavataio (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) anchored the back row with 13 digs.Â
For Hollins, Sophia Maurer posted 11 kills, Breanna Anduiza recorded 25 assists, and Konner Myers finished with 13 digs.Â
The Quakers controlled the match from the opening serve, using balanced offense and strong serving to take the first set 25-20 behind Alcantara and Duvall.Â
They extended their momentum in set two, as Moore and
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) powered a 25-15 win with help from Mapes' precise setting.Â
In the third frame, Moore's 1,000th career kill electrified the team midway through the set. Guilford closed out the sweep 25-12, with
Victoria Harper's (Greensboro, N.C.) steady defense to help to seal the victory.
GAME TWO
The Quakers capped the day with a 3-1 win over Johnson & Wales.
Moore, Alcantara, and Johnson each tallied 11 kills, while Mapes distributed 26 assists.
Zoe Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C.) led the defense with 16 digs.Â
Johnson & Wales was paced by Marion Bataoel with eight kills, Madison Leslie with 10 assists, and Jasmine Sullivan-Thompson with a match-high 19 digs.Â
Guilford opened strong, racing to a 25-15 first-set win behind early kills from Moore and Duvall and a service ace from
Sheryangelis Cay Barbosa (Juncos, Puerto Rico).Â
The Wildcats evened the match in the second set, taking advantage of extended rallies despite steady passing from Cavataio and Whisnant.Â
The Quakers regrouped in set three, using kills from Moore, digs from
Bailey Prewitt (Kalispell, Mt.), and a late block from Duvall to claim a 25-10 edge.Â
In the fourth, Guilford dominated from the start, andÂ
Karly Peacock (Honolulu, Hawaii) notched an assist on a Moore kill as the Quakers rolled to a 25-10 win to close out the day 2-0.
The Quakers return to action on Friday, November 7, hosting Carolina University for Senior Day inside Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
