Randolph-Macon Blanks Women’s Soccer in ODAC Tournament Rematch

Quaker offense cannot find traction in midweek conference clash

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College women's soccer team (7-3-2, 1-3-0 ODAC) was surpassed by Randolph-Macon College (6-4-2, 4-0-0 ODAC), 2-0, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Quarterfinals rematch on Wednesday evening at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center.

Madison Motto (Waxhaw, N.C.) was contested to the tune of 20 shots, 12 of them on-target, and she made double-digit saves in her second-straight appearance, finishing with 10, although she also conceded a pair of goals to drop to 4-2-0. Erin Morris started for the Yellow Jackets making five saves on her 12 shots faced and completed her fourth shutout effort to improve to 5-2-1.

Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) finished with three of the Quakers' five shots on-frame on the night. Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.) also had three looks at the net but none threatened the twine. Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) and Sarah Bain (Haymarket, Va.) also attempted shots that were on-net.

Abigail Pesut netted the game-winner for R-MC with Ally Spangler adding insurance later. Maddie Stubblefield and Emma Owens added assists for the guests in the winning effort.

Neither side would break through in the first half of play with play centralized in the midfield resulting in just 12 combined shots and four on-goal. The top scoring opportunities for each side came consecutively with Berry getting a header look off a corner followed by a counter-attack by the Yellow Jackets with Alexa Stohr getting a chance. However, a fine defensive effort by Madison Forrest (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) deterred it.

The Yellow Jackets would open the scoring in the 53rd minute with a set piece off a corner kick from the right corner. Stubblefield initiated play and found the head of Pesut at the top of the 6' straight-away and she managed to redirect it home for the go-ahead tally.

Spangler got the guests some breathing room in the 64th minute of play as Owens chipped a pass deep down the center of the pitch. Bain's clear attempt for GC was unsuccessful allowing the R-MC senior to gather, dribble to the PK stripe, and get a one-on-one look, going to the bottom-left for her eighth goal.

Guilford looks to halt their skid in Virginia on Saturday, October 11th as they will clash with Bridgewater College kicking off at 4:00 PM.
