Women’s Soccer Toppled in ODAC Clash With Bridgewater

Quakers difficult stretch persists with league defeat

BRIDGEWATER, Va – The Guilford College women's soccer team (7-4-2, 1-4-0 ODAC) could not get back on track, falling to Bridgewater College (9-4-0, 3-3-0 ODAC), 5-0, at the Bridgewater Soccer Complex on Saturday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Dropping to 3-2-2 in net, Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) faced 28 shots, 11 on goal, and only managed six saves against five goals conceded. Erinn Lockard upped her mark to 8-4-0 going a majority of the clean sheet, making one save on the five total shots taken by GC. Micah Stine eventually relived her and was uncontested.

Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) had two of the five Quaker shots on the night, getting one on goal. Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.), Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.), and Chloe Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) all had off-frame shots.

Kendall Garza netted a pair of Bridgewater goals, including the game-winning tally. Anna Belan, Sarah Farally, and Lucy Larson also all scored goals for the hosts with Sophia Phillips, Katherine King, and Lyric Birkley all notching helpers.

The Eagles got on the board early, getting a corner in just the third minute of play. Sent in from the right of the net, the Quakers cleared it, but only to the top of the 18'. There, Phillips sent the ball back in and off the foot of Garza who redirected home her fourth goal of the year.

Later in the half, BC got action working down the right wing, and King sent a cross into the box. Lis had an opportunity to deter the threat, but the ball slipped through her hands and to the awaiting foot of Belan who had an unmissable shot from about five feet away, cashing in on her third goal of the fall in the 18th minute.

Into the second half of play, Guilford's troubles on corners continued as Birkley sent the ball into congestion from the left side of the frame. Placing it well and to the head of Garza, she executed for her second goal of the night and fifth of the year in the 62nd minute.

Adding another in the 70th minute, Bridgewater executed on a free opportunity as the Quakers attempted a clear, but did not get a good foot on it. Instead, it was a perfect setup for Farally who was able to step into a one-touch shot at the top of the 18' straight-away for her first tally of the campaign.

Finally, in the 79th minute, the hosts got one more tally as Aliana Ferreira took a shot that was saved, but the rebound off of Lis' hands went right to Larson who was able to net it and finalize the score at 5-0.

Guilford returns north for ODAC play, matching up with Sweet Briar College on Wednesday, October 15th with first kick set for 6:00 PM.
