HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-7-1, 0-3-0 ODAC) started off smoothly, awakening a strong defensive performance against No. 23 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney College (8-1-1, 2-0-1 ODAC). Although the Quakers would hold the Tigers to one goal throughout most of the first half, their play would wear-thin throughout the duration of the match, resulting in a Tigers victory 3-0, at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) drew the start for the entirety of the match for Guilford. Vital-Peraza would snag six saves off of three goals against, from a battering 15 shot attempts, dropping his record to 2-6-0 on the season. Hampden-Sydney's keeper, Stig Larson, would hold the reins for the entirety of regulation, collecting three saves from five shot attempts, improving his record to 8-1-1 on the season.
Guilford's offensive play was held thin through Hampden-Sydney's guard of the attacking-zone for the entirety of regulation.
Isaac Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) led the charge for the Quakers with two shot attempts, both being on goal.
Ken Vasquez (Pittsboro, N.C.) would follow suit with two shot attempts, one being on goal.
Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.) is back as a significant offensive contributor for Guilford from his lone shot attempt of the night.
Zakky Johnston would lead the charge for the Tigers on offense, zipping through the Quakers defenders to score two goals on the night. Mason Dudley was noteworthy for Hampden-Sydney in the evening with his single goal scored off of two shot attempts, both being on goal. Mo Wumpini would provide the Tigers a plethora of opportunities for scoring chances off of his four shot attempts, with two being on goal, and tacking on an assist to his season total.
The game would kick off on a brief delay, but that didn't stop Guilford's massive start on defense, holding the Tigers scoreless for most of the first half.
Things wouldn't go as smoothly when reaching the conclusion of the 45 minute mark as the Tigers would strike first off a Vital-Peraza misread off of the shot attempt. Dudley's goal for Hampden-Sydney in the 30th minute, assisted by Wumpini, would bring them up one on Guilford heading into the half.
The Quakers would be off to a rocky start once the Tigers struck again in the opening stages of the second half. Johnston would add his goal to the box score at the 48th minute off of assists by Kevin Nova Euceda and Victor Ovalle-Mares
Guilford would slow down during the later stages of the match leading to another on-point dart by Johnston in the 80th minute of play off of Walker Stebbings and Collin Hallman assists, putting this game on ice.
Although the Quakers had a superb start of the match on both sides of the ball, driving the nationally-ranked Tigers scoreless throughout a large chunk of the match, the hope of a victory would subside after Hampden-Sydney put a bow on the match from their powerful offensive performance. Guilford would fall on the losing end of things tonight, resulting in a 3-0 decision in favor of the Tigers.
The Quakers will be drawing their final non-conference contest of the season on the road to take on Southern Virginia University at Knight Stadium on Wednesday, October 8th, 2025. First kick at 4:00PM.
