Men’s Soccer Outmatched by the Southern Virginia’s Execution on Offense

Jeremy Pless’s superbness with shots on goal wasn’t enough for the Quakers to cash in a victory.

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Guilford men's soccer team (3-8-1, 0-3-0 ODAC) fought strong on both sides of the ball in their final non-conference match at Southern Virginia University (4-7-1, 1-1-0 USA SOUTH). Although the Quakers offense was firing on all-cylinders, driving in 13 shots as a squad, they would ultimately be subdued from the Knights game winner, resulting in a 1-0 decision in favor of the Knights at Knight Stadium.

Ildis Vital-Peraza (Vienna, Va.) held the reins in goal for Guilford for all 90 minutes of regulation. Vital-Peraza would scoop up two saves off of one goal against, from a pummelling 11 shot attempts, dropping his record to 2-7-0 on the season. Southern Virginia's keeper, Troy Chamberlain, was majestic from start to finish, collecting five saves from a pounding 13 shot attempts, improving his record to 4-4-1 on the season.

Jeremy Pless (Titusville, Fla.) showed off his accuracy for Guilford during times of ball possession with three shots on the afternoon, all being on goal. Hector Rodriguez (Sanford, N.C.) gave the Quakers plenty of scoring opportunities with two shot attempts in total. Jaykob Garbia (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Cameron Robinson (Garner, N.C.) were precise in giving Guilford a scoring chance with a shot attempt each, both were on goal.

Brock Hester would be the only goal scorer throughout the match, hitting on his chance for the Knights after nailing his two shot attempts, both on goal. Jacob Cornejo would see many looks at the net with his four shot opportunities for Southern Virginia. Kohl Simmons would display his significance on offense for the Knights with two shot attempts, one being on goal.

It was all offense on both sides of the ball for the Knights and the Quakers throughout the entirety of the first half. Things would start to get dicey as fouls and yellow cards would begin to get drawn for both teams.

Guilford would continue to fend off the Southern Virginia defensive front, leading to six shot chances for the Quakers, but were unable to strike off of the Knights classy goalkeeping skills by Chamberlain after 45 minutes.

The second-half would become rocky as no team would launch their chances to eliminate their scoreless drought after continuous fouls and shot chances foiled from the Knights and the Quakers.

Southern Virginia would break away with the non-conference victory after the Hester goal in the low-left corner of the net for the Knights in the 87th minute. Guilford's minimal mistake would lead to their downfall, resulting in a 1-0 decision in favor of the Knights.

The Quakers are back in action at home for another ODAC showdown against Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, October 11th at Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center, first kick at 6:00PM.
