SWEET BRIAR, Va. – With an offensive onslaught virtually from the opening whistle, the Guilford College women's soccer team (8-4-2, 2-4-0 ODAC) got back in the win column, besting Sweet Briar College (4-8-0, 0-7-0 ODAC) in a high-scoring affair, 6-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday night at Meyer Field.
Lorelai Lis (Bradenton, Fla.) saw 12 shots sent her way, saving seven of them against two goals conceded to earn the win for GC and up her record to 4-2-2. Mia Victoria got the nod for the Vixens and fell to 2-8-0 after allowing six goals against 19 saves on the 51 total sent her way.
Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.) netted her second brace of the fall to headline the Quaker offense.
Sarah Bain (Haymarket, Va.) made her first collegiate goal count as it finished as the game-winner.
Kylie Muse (Browns Summit, N.C.) also found twine for the first time in her collegiate career.
Sarah Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) also found paydirt while
Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.) and
Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) had two helpers apiece with
Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) pitching in one later.
Elena Fomin and Alexis Diaz were the SBC goal scorers with both tallies unassisted.
Guilford opened the scoring virtually right-away with their earliest goal of the season so far. Yates dished in a long send from left wing around mid-pitch. The pass drew Victoria off her line and as a result, Miller required just one-touch at the top of the 18' to allude the Vixen keeper before finishing into the wide-open net with her fourth tally of the season in the third minute.
The Quakers got a second goal in the match's single-digits, in the eighth minute of action. Yates got in deep down the right sideline, sending a cross into the box. While the SBC keeper stayed home this time, Overton needed a single touch to create space against a defender, shooting from near the top of the 18' straight-away for her first goal of the evening.
A set piece led to GC's third score as Berry initiated play from the left wing. Bain's first try was blocked, but right back to her, and her second attempt would not be, as she scored her first goal of her career in the 34
th minute.
Fomin got one back for the hosts before Guilford drew a foul in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Muse stepped up for the chance and cashed into the bottom-left for her first collegiate goal in the 40
th minute.
Moments later, the guests added on another in the match's 43
rd minute. Berry maneuvered between defenders right down the middle of the pitch. Eventually, she located Johnson who had all the space she could ask for at the top of the 18' and she swiftly scored her third goal of season.
Overton netted her second of the game in the 75
th minute. Brown flipped the field with an easy pass from left wing to right wing. The senior, Overton, was all alone at the top of the 18' off the left post and cashed in with her second goal of the game and fourth of the fall to extend the edge.
Diaz got one back for the Vixens in the 84
th minute, but the differential was too great and all it did was finalize the score at 6-2.
Senior Day Saturday is next on the docket for Guilford as they will host Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 18
th starting at 6:00 PM at the Armfield Athletic Center.
