Over 9,180 total canned goods collected for Food Banks

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A couple of days after the Guilford College football team won the 'Soup Bowl" on the field, the Quakers Student-Athlete Activities Committee (SAAC), and the Greensboro community as a whole, came away as winners collecting north of 9,000 canned goods and nonperishable food items in the massively successful food drive in conjunction with the football contest.

"I could not be more proud of our efforts during the annual Soup Bowl food drive, collecting over 1,000 more cans than last year," Women's Basketball Head Coach, and SAAC Advisor, Sarah Mathews said. "It is completely student-led which shows the initiative they are willing to take for a good cause."

At the gates for the game itself, Guilford saw its bin filled with 927 total canned goods against 566 for Greensboro College, seeing the Quakers come away as 'winners' in the head-to-head drive. Overall, Guilford SAAC and the athletic teams raised 9,180 total canned goods and nonperishable food items in the collection, with all raised goods going to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of NW North Carolina and the Quaker Cupboard.

Proud and appreciative of the collection efforts by all student-athletes across the 20 varsity athletic programs, three teams stood out, led by men's basketball who averaged 72 cans collected per player for the intra-department competition. They were followed closely by the women's hoops squad with 69 cans collected on a per-player basis, and women's soccer taking third averaging 67 goods per player.

As an Athletics Department, we commend the philanthropic efforts off all involved in the food drive. Special thanks to Coach Mathews in addition to SAAC President, Ashtyn Zeigler, and the rest of the committee for their tremendous success in this event.
