VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Guilford's softball team traveled upstate for a double header against #12 Virginia Wesleyan University. Ending in a not so hoped for outcome, the Marlins swept the Quakers by scores of 8-4 and 8-0.
The Quakers' record now drops to 12-10. Additionally, these are the first conference upsets of the season, dropping that record to 4-2. For the Marlins, they continue uphill with a 15-6 record, 5-1 in conference play.Â
Alexis Lester (Elkin, N.C.) started game one for the Quakers, but did not last long, allowing six runs in 0.2 innings. She took the pitching loss, as her record fell to 0-3. To follow this,
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) took her place, pitching the remaining 5.1 innings. She allowed six hits, two runs, struck out two, and faced 23 batters.Â
GC's offense had a valiant effort throughout game one but it wasn't enough to take the cake. The Quakers were able to make a slight mid-game comeback but the Marlins' early advantage created too much of a gap.Â
Two Quakers took to the mound in game two, the first of which was Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.). Pitching 2.2 innings, she took the loss, falling to 5-4. On her account, the Marlins scored all their runs. Additionally,
Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.) pitched for 1.1 innings, facing just six batters.Â
GC's offense went scoreless in game two, but three Quakers recorded hits, Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) singled in her sole at-bat, while Gray and Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) recorded the other two hits in the loss.Â
GAME 1:
Of the two contests, the first went a bit better for the Quakers than the second. The first inning started off with a bang as Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) homered one out the park, her first collegiate homer. On the flip side, the Marlins replied swiftly, racking up six runs in the bottom frame alone and then pinned two more in the second inning. This made the score 8-1 and from here on out, Guilford had quite a lot of trouble trying to close the gap.Â
In the third inning, Alli Clemens (Cocoa, Fla.) singled to right field, en route to both Gray and
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) making it home. The fourth was quiet for both squads until the fifth when Guilford racked up one more run. Lancos started off the inning with a walk. As Calus batted next, Lancos advanced to second. Then, as Gray singled to right field, Lancos made it two bases, and racked up an RBI. The total of four Guilford runs was not enough to catch up with the opposing Marlins, ending in a 8-4 upset.Â
GAME 2:
Looking for redemption, Guilford was unable to overcome the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan tallied five runs in the second inning and another three in the third inning. The game ended after just the fifth inning due to the run-rule, Gulford going scoreless throughout, the contest ended in favor of the Marlins, 8-0.
In the midst of a weekend gauntlet, the Quakers now travel to 8th-ranked Randolph-Macon tomorrow, Sunday, April 7 in Ashland, Va. for a doubleheader at the RMC Softball Field. Start times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.Â
