ASHLAND, Va. - A rough day for Guilford's softball team as they traveled to RMC Softball Field to test their skill against eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon College. The Quakers only able to record one run between both contests, thus falling 3-1 and 6-0.
This upset brings Guilford's record down to 12-12, and also evens out their conference record to 4-4. For the Yellow Jackets, they improve to 16-2-2 and in conference play, their record moves up to 7-1.
Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.)Â pitched all of game one and took the drop to her record, now 2-2. All Yellow Jacket runs occurred on her account, six total.Â
GC's offense struggled to get on the board throughout the entire game. However, five total hits were recorded, two of which came from Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.).Â
Switching positions in game two, Gray went in as pitcher this time around. She was at the mound for a full six innings, unfortunately taking the pitching loss, her record stands at 5-3. She caused two strikeouts and faced 29 batters. The Yellow Jackets got 11 hits, but only three resulted in runs.
For game two, the Quakers finally made it on the board, but not until the fourth inning, and with just one run. Only four hits were recorded for Guilford, two of which are credited to Faith Fennell (Buena Park, Calif.).
GAME 1
Not a lot to report on with game one as the Quakers went scoreless throughout. Randolph-Macon took an early lead, racking up three runs in the first inning, then adding two more by the time the third inning was complete, the score stood at 5-0. After two quiet innings, the Yellow Jackets tagged on one more run at the bottom of the sixth.
Guilford proved unsuccessful in their last attempt at bat, top of the seventh, the game ended in a loss, 6-0.Â
GAME 2:
Again, the second game wasn't much more successful than the first. The Yellow Jackets achieved a slight early lead in similar fashion to the first contest. Having three runs after the third inning, RMC stood ahead 3-0.Â
In the fourth inning, Guilford finally recorded their first run of the day. Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) reached on a fielding error by RMC's right fielder, resulting in a run for
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.). The remaining frames in the contest went scoreless, Randolph-Macon taking the victory, 3-1.Â
The Quakers continue their six-game away trek next in Ferrum, Va., facing off against Ferrum College. The doubleheader will take place at the Vickie Van Kleeck Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 10. Later start times than usual, the games are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.Â
