GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Mental Health Awareness Day at Haworth Field, Guilford took on conference foe Lynchburg in an afternoon double header. Repping green and white jerseys, ribbons, and wristbands in honor of today's cause, the Quakers were in good spirits, sweeping their competition with scores of 5-0 and 8-7.
This full sweep advances Guilford's record to 12-8, opening up conference play by winning their third and fourth straight games. For Lynchburg, their record drops to 17-7, and 5-3 in conference play.
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) pitched for all seven innings, bringing her record to 5-2. She allowed just one hit in game one after facing 27 batters. Additionally, she struck out three.
The Quakers tallied nine hits off of Hornet pitcher Kailey Dorcsis in game one, four of which came from catcher Alli Clemens (Cocoa, Fla.) and first baseman
Faith Fennell (Buena Park, Calif.).
Game two pitcher was Dillion Northen (Kernersville, N.C.), who went the full seven innings. Her record improved to 5-3, allowing 11 hits and seven runs.
The offense of the second contest had one of its greatest moments in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs. Lynchburg made some late-inning runs to eventually tie the contest at seven, and it came down to three more outs to avoid extra innings. Seemingly unfazed by the events of the previous outing, Emma Patterson (Mocksville, N.C.) hit a leadoff single, stole second, and pinch-hitter
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) drove her home with the series-clinching hit, coming away with the walk-off win.
GAME 1:
The game began scoreless for the first three innings, until at the bottom of the fourth, Guilford stepped up to the plate. On a fielder's choice with Gray batting, Kassidy Lacos (Irvine, Calif.) made it home, putting GC on the board. This was followed by Alli Clemens doubling to left center, bringing home Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.). The score stood at 2-0 after the fourth.
The fifth was just as quiet for both squads as the first three innings of the contest. However, the sixth was a big inning for the Quakers, scoring three. In a ripple effect of plays, Fennel doubled up the right field line, putting Patterson on third, and bringing
Camdyn Hill (Lexington, N.C.) home, who was pinch running for Clemens. GC scored two runs on the next play, as
Makenley Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.) singled to center field, bringing home both Fennel and Patterson. These were the final scores of the contest, resulting in a Quaker 5-0 victory.
GAME 2:
The second contest went less according to plan for Guilford, at least in the first few innings. Going into the bottom of the fourth, the score stood at 4-0, Lynchburg with the lead. However, the Quakers not only tied the game, but then took the lead in the fourth, tallying up a whopping seven runs in one inning alone. Mitchell was the opening batter, singling up the middle. She eventually made it home, three plays later when Ragan Bethea (Hamer, S.C.) grounded out to the second baseman. Immediately following,
Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) doubled to right center, allowing Fennell to score. Next, Lancos singled up to the shortstop, getting Stoner to third, but then due to a throwing error, she made it one more base, tallying a run. Lancos eventually snagged another run, after stealing a base and safely making her way around the mound with hits by Calus and Gray.
At this moment, the game was tied. With two outs recorded, the Quakers were craving the lead. Clemens doubled up center field, leading to two RBIs, Calus and Lancos making it home. A couple plays later when bases were loaded, with Clemens on third, Patterson walked to first, resulting in a run for Clemens. This was the seventh and final run of an intense fourth inning.
The fifth inning was quiet for both squads and Lynchburg racked one point in the sixth. The seventh inning is where things started to get heated as the Hornets tallied two runs, tying the game at seven. However, although tense, the seventh was quite simple for the Quakers. Patterson got straight to the point, singling to center field, then stealing second, and finally making it home after Johnson singled to left field. This resulted in a walk-off win by the Quakers, making the final score 8-7.
The Quakers will travel to Virginia Beach for their next conference matchup against Virginia Wesleyan University at Broyles Field. The double header will take place Saturday, April 6. Game times are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
