GREENSBORO, N.C. - Softball had a full crowd at Haworth field as the team's Seniors and Graduate students were celebrated for their commitment to the team, as their time at Guilford College came to a close. It was a bittersweet day for these athletes as they reminisced about moments with their team and look forward to their future career paths. Putting all the festivities of the day behind, the Quakers fought hard in a non-conference doubleheader against 17th-ranked Pfeiffer University, falling in both, 6-0 and 7-4.
The results from today's match takes Guilford's record to 13-17, their conference play record remains at 5-7. Pfeiffer extends their win streak to nine, their record stands at 33-1 and in conference play, they hold up an impressive record of 11-1.
One of Guilford's celebrated seniors,
Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.), took to the mound all seven innings of game one. This being said, she takes the pitching loss, her record falls to 2-3. Kinney allowed 11 hits, six resulted in runs, of which four were earned. For the Falcons, their pitcher, Kali Morton's record remains undefeated, 15-0.
Guilford's offense goes scoreless throughout, however, hits in game one were recorded by
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.),
Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.),
Faith Fannell (Buena Park, Calif.), and
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.).
There was a rotation of pitchers for Guilford in game two.
Alexis Lester (Eklin, N.C.) pitched the first 2.2 innings. Struggling a bit, five hits and five runs were recorded on her account, and took the pitching loss, with her record falling to 0-4. Next up, Gray took up the mitt for 3.1 innings. Pfeiffer was able to tag on two runs in this time frame. Additionally, Gray struck out one. Briefly up to the mound was
Taylor Mitchell (St. Albans, Vt.) for the final inning, allowing one walk.
Guilford, finally able to get on the board this time around, stayed competitive with their ranked counterpart. The Quakers scored four runs throughout, not enough to get ahead, 7-4.
GAME 1
The contest began scoreless for the first two innings. Then, top of the third, Pfeiffer tagged two runs to their board. The Falcons continued this momentum throughout, adding one run in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh. Guilford unable to make a dent, Pfeiffers took the victory, 6-0.
GAME 2
The second game began in similar fashion to the first, scoreless for both squads throughout the first two innings. Top of the third, the Falcons racked up five runs in just one inning, taking an early advantage, 5-0.
Pfeiffer went scoreless in the fourth inning, however, Guilford finally had their moment to score their first runs of the day. The frame began with
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) singling towards right center.
Kaci Johnson (Wintervile, N.C.) then doubled to right field, leading Gray to third base. This was followed by a big hit for
Makenley Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.), swinging a double to center field, en route to both Johnson and Gray making it around the diamond. The score now stood at 5-2.
As the fifth inning began, the Falcons added on two more runs, the sixth inning then quiet for both squads. A glimpse of hope in the seventh as Guilford tagged on two more runs.
Emma Patterson (Mocksville, N.C.), quick on her feet, pinch ran for Fennel, and then stole second.
Kylee Duarte (Corona, Calif.) grounded out to the first baseman, causing Patterson to advance to third, and then make it home due to a throwing error by the Falcons.
Additionally,
Nicole Gamula (Wellington, Fla.), who was pinch running for
Alli Clemens (Cocoa, Fla.), ran home in the same play. No more runs were recorded for the evening, the final score in Pfeiffer's favor 7-4.
The Quakers remain home at Haworth Field where they take on Randolph College for a doubleheader in just a few short days. These conference matches will take place on Tuesday, April 16, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
