GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford's softball team was back at Haworth Field for their third doubleheader in four days, facing off against conference foe, Randolph College. Not only fighting the heat, but fighting the opposing Wildcats, the Quakers ended with a split, ahead in the first game, 3-0, but falling in the second, 11-3.
The result of this double header puts the Quakers' record to 14-18. Additionally, their conference play stands at 6-8. For the Wildcats, their record goes to 8-20, and they snag a conference win, 4-10.
On the mound for the Quakers in game one was
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.), as she went the distance to increase her record to 7-4. Upon five hits, there were no runs, and she struck out one.
For Guilford's offensive squad, three runs in total were recorded;
Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.),
Makenley Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.), and
Faith Fennell (Buena Park, Calif.).
In total, four pitchers were put in to throw for game two, each not having the best of luck against the Wildcats. First in the circle was
Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) who ended with the pitching loss, her record falling to 5-7. Of the four, she had the most time at the mound, pitching four innings. On her account, Randolph tallied four runs on six hits. Time for a change,
Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.) went to the diamond. She allowed three runs on seven hits, and struckout one. Following Kinney,
Alexis Lester (Eklin, N.C.) entered the game for just 0.2 innings in which the Wildcats tallied four more runs. After this,
Taylor Mitchell finished out the contest, striking out one.
With a final score of 11-3, clearly, Guilford's offense was a bit off their rocker today. However, despite the upset, Stoner went four for four in game two.
GAME 1
The first contest was scoreless for the first two innings. In the third,
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) reached first on a fielder's choice, though this took
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) out at second, allowing Stoner to advance to third. Then, occurred a first and third double play, getting Stoner home, the score stands 1-0.
The fourth inning was deemed successful for the Quakers as well. Setting up the field for success, at one moment, Fennel stole second and Mitchell stole third. Following this, was a big hit for
Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.), doubling towards left center. This brings both Fennel and Mitchell home, now putting the Quakers ahead 3-0. This score became final as no more players made it back to home plate, GC took the win.
GAME 2
Both squads came out of the dugouts, game faces on, and ready to play ball. Randolph opened the first inning tagging with their first run of the day, and first of the contest. This was followed by a huge second inning for the Quakers, scoring three in one play. After Kinney reached base on a fielders' choice and
Alli Clemons (Cocoa, Fla.) doubled, up came Fennell to bat. She took the first pitch that she saw and absolutely crushed the ball out of the park, her second home run of the season. The score was in Guilford's favor as they led, 3-1.
The Wildcats then found their groove, scoring two runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh. Changing the pitcher four times, the score stood at 11-3 in Randolph's favor, and the margin was too great for Guilford to mount a comeback.
There is not much of a break for the Quakers as they head north to Danville, Virginia in just two days to take on Averett University at Cougar Field for a crucial conference twin-bill for upcoming tournament seeding. The doubleheader is scheduled on Thursday, April 18 with start times at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
