Softball Gets Swept by Opposing Eagles

Guilford Commemorates Former Softball Coach, Dennis Shores

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A windy day at Haworth Field as Guilford's softball team took on Bridgewater College in an afternoon doubleheader. The first game of the afternoon was deemed upsetting throughout. Though a valiant effort in the second, the Quakers still fell in both, 4-0 and 5-4.

Due to the result of today's double header, the Quakers fall to 13-15, and 5-7 in conference play. The Eagles advance to 18-16, in conference play they rise to 11-5.

Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) pitched throughout all seven innings but unfortunately took the loss, her record falling to 6-4. Bridgewater achieved 11 hits, four of which resulted in runs on Gray's account.

The contest itself was not very successful for the Quaker offense due to hitting an abundance of pop-flys. Guilford went scoreless throughout, 4-0.

In game two, Dillon Northen (Kernersville, N.C.) pitched in its entirety. She allowed 10 hits, five of which resulted in runs, and faced 34 batters.

Guilford's offense had a successful early start, matching their opponent, and leading by two after the third quarter. However, as the game unfolded, the Eagles reclaimed the lead, and didn't let it go, ultimately taking the victory 5-4.

GAME 1:

The first contest began, giving a shout out to longtime former head coach, Dennis Shores. Guilford's players presented him with a framed jersey, his name embroidered, showing appreciation for his hard work and commitment to Guilford softball.

Guilford had a rough run in game one, unable to get on the board. Scoring was quiet for both squads for the first three innings until the visiting Eagles tallied one at the top of the fourth. As the game came close to an end, Bridgewater scored three runs in the sixth inning. Those runs were the last of the game, giving Bridgewater the win, 4-0.

GAME 2

The second contest opened strong in the first inning, Bridgewater tallying two, Guilford able to match this energy. Makenley Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.) singled up the middle, followed by a big hit from Faith Fennel (Buena Park, Calif.), doubling towards the right center. This resulted in Mitchell making it three bases around the diamond, all the way home. With Fennell now on second, Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) singled to right field, allowing enough time for Fennel to tack a run of her own. At this moment, the score stood at 2-2.

Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) started off the second innings with a single down the right field line. With Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) up to bat, Singletary gets to second base. Then, Mitchel singled to right field, but advanced an extra base due to a throwing error by the Eagles. This allowed Singletary to make it around the other half of the diamond, allowing the Quakers to take the lead, 3-2.

In the fourth, the Quakers added yet another run to the board. Johnson started out the inning and was credited with the run. She advanced to second while Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) was up at bat, then went to third due to a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Goyings (Lake Villa, Ill.). Finally, after Singletary hit a single to right field, Johnson made it home, 4-2.

From here on out, things went downhill for the Quakers. The Eagles tallied one run in the fourth, and two in the fifth inning. The score stood at 5-4. Neither team advanced in the last two innings of the game, thus the score stood final and the Eagles took home a full sweep.

Guilford remains at home for their next double header against #17 ranked Pfeiffer University. Additionally, the Quakers are celebrating Senior Day. The games are to take place on Sunday, April 14, set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
