First Quarter Onslaught Sets Tone, Women’s Lacrosse Steamrolls Greensboro

Quakers outlast weather and crosstown rivals behind 14 first half goals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind an offensive explosion that we have yet to see this season over the final six minutes of the first quarter, the Guilford College women's lacrosse team clobbered crosstown rival Greensboro College, 18-3 on a damp Wednesday evening at Pride Field.

With the win, the Quakers improve to 4-4 on the season. The Pride, meanwhile, fall to 0-7.

Zenna Carson (Blacksburg, Va.) played the first half in goal for Guilford, allowing two goals against one save, improving to 4-4. Gabby Matthews (Kernersville, N.C.) made one save against one goal allowed in the second half. Carly Walton got the start for the hosts and fell to 0-4 after allowing 14 goals against seven saves. When the Quakers eased up in the second half, D'Kayla Thomasson still allowed four goals against two saves in relief.

Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine) led Guilford with four goals and three assists adding four draw controls and five groundballs. Maggie Bryson (Kernersville, N.C.) added three goals and two assists while Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.) and Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) had a trio of goals each with the former collecting a career-high eight draw controls. Emily Gearhart had two goals for Greensboro.

Despite the final score, it took the Quakers some time to hit the accelerator. Over the first nine minutes of action, the guests only had a single tally, a man-up score by Sam Keene (Greensboro, N.C.) at the 11:26 mark. However, once the ninth minute came and went, Guilford dominated. Hartnett lit the spark scoring twice within 45 seconds before just over a minute elapsed and Bryson found paydirt. Gravley followed by getting in on the fun with Guilford's fourth goal within 120 seconds. Garland added another at the 2:19 mark before Kylie Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) put the finishing touches on the offensive explosion with the team's sixth goal from five different players in under four minutes, making the score 7-0 after the first quarter of action.

Guilford matched their first quarter scoring output in the second stanza, but first the Pride got one back on a score by Gearhart. Hartnett countered with her third of the contest before assisting on Keene's second in another man-up chance. As the contest reached its 20th minute, Kylie Horn (Fairfax, Va.) connected with Wood, getting the Quakers into double-digits. Hartnett got the game into running clock, quite possibly the only other thing besides the weather that could have slowed them down on this evening, with her fourth of the game with 8:46 to go in the second. Bryson set up Garland's second tally before she pilled on two of her own. Greensboro did bookend the period's scoring with Keira Fenyo scoring while a man-up, but the score was 14-2 in favor of the visitors.

The Quakers ran up a 23-5 advantage in shot attempts and kept the Pride below a .500 clear percentage at 4-of-9 in the first half while scooping up ten ground balls.

In the third quarter, was a comparatively uneventful one. Garland connected on her third score of the night less just 80 seconds in with Gearhart countering just a tick under the seven-minute mark. After a turnover on a clear attempt, the Quakers then beat the horn with Horn off a feed from Bryson, making the score 16-3.

The guests tacked on two more Gravely tallies in the final frame, bringing the final score to 18-3 before the game was called due to lightning with 3:29 remaining.

Guilford returns to Appenzeller Field next for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) clash with the University of Lynchburg on Saturday, March 30th. First draw is set for 1:00 PM.
