Lynchburg Sinks Women’s Lacrosse in Conference Clash

Four Quakers find the back of the net in defeat

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was a picture-perfect spring afternoon at Appenzeller Field but unfortunately, the result was less ideal for the Guilford College women's lacrosse team who fell 19-4 to the University of Lynchburg on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

The defeat sends the Quakers to 4-5, 1-2 against conference competition while the Hornets advance to 7-3, 4-0 against ODAC opponents.

Zenna Carson (Blacksburg, Va.) fell to 4-5 in net for GC despite making 16 saves although she allowed 19 goals. Corrinne West allowed all three shots on goal to find the back of the net across the first three quarters of play. Despite this she got the win to improve to 7-0. Kayla Brady made one save and allowed one goal in mop up duty in the fourth.

Maggie Hartnett (Hebron, Maine), Maggie Bryson (Kernersville, N.C.), Emma Garland (Hampstead, N.C.), and Riley Gravley (Greensboro, N.C.) each scored for GC with Hartnett adding an assist on the day. The other three each had three draw controls and Garland added two caused turnovers and three groundballs. Grace Holmes (Chestertown, Md.) led Guilford field players with four groundballs as well. Raegan Bradley and Sydney Dumas served as the catalyst for the Hornet offense, with four goals and an assist each with the latter adding six groundballs and three draw controls.

Lynchburg wasted little time getting on the board as Payton Saville went straight down the field and scored just 19 seconds in. Tori King scored about five and a half minutes later before Hartnett got the Quakers on the board with a free position look with 3:22 remaining. Bradley netted her first to end the frame with the score 3-1 in favor of the guests.

The Hornets would pull away in the second stanza with Bradley scoring her second and third consecutive goals before Neely Morris found paydirt. Bryson countered with one off a Hartnett assist but Seville responded with a free position tally. Garland scored her sixth of the season off a free position chance but Dumas closed the frame with consecutive scores to make it 9-3 at the half.

The visitors pitched a shutout in the third with Chastity Koerner scoring twice, Dumas adding two more scores, Bradley netting her fourth, King recording her second goal, and Carson Quigley and getting in on the action as the contest got into running clock.

Gravely opened the fourth with a score with Lynchburg adding two more to bring the final score to 19-4.

Guilford completes their stretch of three-straight home games to open ODAC play next Saturday when they host Eastern Mennonite next Saturday at Appenzeller Field. First draw will be 1:00 PM.
