RALEIGH, N.C. – Thwack, thwack, thwack was the melody for the Guilford College softball team at the Meredith Softball Complex as every Quaker starter recorded at least one hit, collecting 16 as a team on their way to a 13-4 run-rule victory in game one on Sunday afternoon over Meredith College, the Angels returned the favor, taking game two 10-1.
Â
The Quakers take their first loss of the young season with the split, but still stand at 3-1. Meredith, on the other hand, have divided their first two doubleheaders of the year and stand at 2-2.
Â
Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) picked up her second complete game in as many starts, going all 6.0 innings in the consolidated contest, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, two walks, striking out two in the winning effort to improve to 2-0 in game one. Hannah Weigle got the nod for the hosts, but failed to record an out, allowing five runs, four earned on five hits and a walk across her six batters faced to move to 1-1.
Â
The Quakers offense had itself a day with all but two starters recording multiple knocks.
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) and
Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) were the standouts with each recording a double and a home run in the victory, with the former driving in four runs while the latter plated two and scored three more. Both Avery Puryear and Savannah Talley drove in two runs for the hosts in the first contest.
Â
Dillon Northern (Kernersville, N.C.) got the game two start for Guilford, but only managed 1.1 innings of work, getting hit to the tune of seven hits and one walk, leading to seven runs, four of them earned, to fall to 1-1. Lillie Davis went the distance in the truncated game two, throwing 5.0 innings allowing one run, it was earned, on three hits and two walks while striking out three to improve to 1-1.
Â
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) had two hits and two steals, scoring the team's lone run, driven in by Singletary. Davis helped her own cause with two hits and three RBI at the plate. Gracie Massengale also drove in three, while Puryear went deep in the second game.
Â
GAME 1
The Quakers jumped all over Angels' starter Hannah Weigle in the first. Back-to-back singles by
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) and
Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) set the stage for
Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) who clobbered her first home run of the season to right, giving Guilford a 3-0 lead before fans had settled into their seats. A walk, single, and single with a misplay in center brought in another run, and prompted a pitching change. An RBI groundout by
Makenley Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.) brought the score to 5-0 before a Meredith hitter had even picked up a bat.
Â
GC tacked on more runs in the innings that followed. Johnson plated her third run of the contest with a double in the second, then two more in inning three before the hosts finally got on the board in the home half. Avery Puryear brought in a run on a single in the bottom of the third, but it was countered by
Morgan Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) who blasted her first long ball of the season over the left field fence making the score 10-1.
Â
An extra run on a single by Lancos brought the Guilford advantage to double-digits in the top of the fifth before the hosts countered once more. With their backs against the run rule, Meredith extended the contest with a trio of runs, the first on Puryear's second RBI-single of the game and the other two on a single by Savannah Talley.
Â
The game was only extended for one more frame however, as Guilford scored twice in the top of the sixth, and this time the hosts did not have a counter, as Guilford secured the 13-4 run-rule victory.
Â
GAME 2
The second game was Meredith's turn to jump on the board in the first. They loaded the bases immediately and Lillie Davis drove in two with a single to grab the lead. Gracie Massengale reached on an error, plating two more and the hosts led 4-0.
Â
Avery Puryear cranked a two-run home run in the second, and the Angels added two more before the inning was through before the Quakers got on the board in the top of the third. A single, a walk, a double steal, and a Morgan
Singletary (Laurel Hill, N.C.) groundout plated
Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) to make the score 8-1.
Â
Two more Meredith runs in the third rounded out the scoring, bringing the final score to 10-1.
Â
Guilford returns to their home diamond on Wednesday afternoon against Salem College, game one starts at 2 PM.
