Guilford Sweeps Salem in Afternoon Doubleheader

Game two becomes a race against rain

GREENSBORO, N.C. - It has finally risen above 60 degrees in Greensboro, N.C. yet this doubleheader softball game at Haworth Field turned out to be a windy one against Salem College. The Quakers showed up and showed out in both matches, ending 8-1, and 13-0, respectively. Game two turned into a race against time and rain, ending after the fifth inning, GC dominating throughout.

This pair of wins brings the Quakers' record to 5-1. For the Spirits, they now drop to 3-7.

Dillon Northern (Kernersville, N.C.) threw for four innings in game one allowing five hits, one walk, caused one strikeout, Salem's only run, and faced 17 batters, improving to 2-1 in the circle. For the remaining frames, Shiloh Gray (Lexington, N.C.) picked up the mit, allowing just one hit, causing two players to strikeout, and was eye to eye with 10 batters to pick up her first save of the season.

For the Quaker offense, Grace Calus (Creedmoor, N.C.) was the star hitter of game one, going 3-for-4, scoring three runs and tallied four RBI's, knocking in both Kassidy Lancos (Irvine, Calif.) and Lani Procell (Orlando, Fla.) on two occasions. Additionally, Chloee Stoner (Salisbury, N.C.) ran home for a run.

Going into game two, Morgan Kinney (Browns Summit, N.C.) went into the circle as pitcher for three innings. She faced 10 batters and recorded one strikeout to improve to 1-0. For the remaining two innings, Alexis Lester (Elkin, N.C.) had an opportunity to pitch, facing seven batters and only allowing one hit.

GC's offense was like we have not seen yet this season, having 18 of the 23-player roster up to bat at one point or another during the game. Emma Patterson (Mocksville, N.C.) acquired the most runs for her team, clocking in with three. The remaining ten tallies were credited to 10 different players.

GAME 1
The game opened scoreless for the first inning until the second, when Alli Clemens (Cocoa, Fla.) singled to right field, getting Stoner home, putting Gulford first on the board. Calus tacked on another run with the help of teammate Kaci Johnson (Winterville, N.C.) in the third. GC scoreless in the fourth before Salem finally got their first score, to bring things to 2-1.

Calus, without a doubt, moved the chains for GC at the bottom of the fifth. She doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on the throw, bringing Lancos and Procell around to score. Following this, Johnson hit a ground ball out to second base, allowing Calus back to home plate, as the three-run inning for the Quakers made the score 5-1.

GC continued with their flow into the sixth. Calus batted in similar fashion to her fifth-inning performance, achieving another double, this time, out to left center, once again, bringing Lancos and Procell back to score. Calus ended the first game of this doubleheader by tallying one more run on a wild pitch, ending with a final score, 8-1.

GAME 2
Let's just say… the second game was quite chaotic. But first, let's talk about the Quakers scoring eight runs in just the second inning alone. A ripple effect of tallies began when Procell singled up the middle causing Kylie Durden (Bladenboro, N.C.) to come home. Over the next few batters, Candace Strombeck (Creedmoor, N.C.) and Procell also made it all 240 feet. Next, Calus singled to left field, en route to an additional 2 runs to come home. By the end of the second, the Quakers led 9-1.

At the bottom of the third, Faith Fennell (Buena Park, Calif.) clobbered a home run, the first of the season at Haworth Field for the Quakers over the centerfield fence. GC tallied up three more scores before the match came to a halt after the fifth inning with the run rule in effect with a 13-0 Guilford win.

The Quakers now begin an eight game stretch away from Haworth Field. They are to battle Methodist University in a doubleheader match on Saturday, March 2. The games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C.
