Guilford SAAC Finishes Second in ODAC Fall Food Drive Campaign

Quakers finish with 9,762 nonperishable food items collected

FOREST, Va. – The Guilford College Student-Athlete Activities Committee (SAAC) collected 9,762 nonperishable food items this fall, ranking second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) annual league-wide food drive competition, as announced by the conference offices on Wednesday afternoon.

The event ran from September 1 through November 22, with university SAAC organizations running drives and initiatives to see who, of the 15 full-time member schools, could raise the most. The victor this year was Averett University with the Cougars racking up 10,371 items this fall. Guilford followed with an extremely strong 9,762 items collected, doubling the total of the third-place finisher, Randolph-Macon College who finished with 4,730.

More than 39,000 non-perishable food items were collected conference-wide in the drive, surpassing last year's total of 38,635. Collections were then distributed to organizations chosen by the athletic departments themselves with Guilford's donations benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank.

In the conference's release, ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston stated, "Our student athlete advisory committees have continued to make an impact in their local communities. This food drive is one of the many ways they give back. Over the last six years the conference collectively donated nearly 140,000 canned goods to local organizations. This cooperation goes to show what a difference we can make together."

GC's collection total was driven by the 23rd Annual Gate City Soup Bowl competition back in September, during which the Quakers collected north of 9,000 canned goods and nonperishable food items in conjunction with the event.

"I could not be more proud of our efforts during the annual Soup Bowl food drive, collecting over 1,000 more cans than last year," Women's Basketball Head Coach, and SAAC Advisor, Sarah Mathews said regarding the Soup Bowl. "It is completely student-led which shows the initiative they are willing to take for a good cause."

This marks the second-straight season in which Guilford has finished second in this conference competition with a cause.
