Six Quaker Women’s Soccer Players Named Academic All-District

Franken advances to national ballot for excellence on and off the pitch

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.), Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.), Grace Overton (Apex, N.C.), Kylie Muse (Browns Summit, N.C.), Mya Rivera (Parish, Fla.), and Jenna Shotton (Walnut Cove, N.C.) represented the Guilford College women's soccer team on the Collegiate Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, with Franken being selected to advance to the national ballot for a chance to earn Academic All-American status, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.

In order to qualify for the honor in soccer, student-athletes must be at least an academic and athletic sophomore, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher in the classroom. Meanwhile, a nominee must have competed in 90% of the team's total games played, or start in 66% of the team's total games. No more than six student-athletes may be a nominee in soccer per school, per gender.

Franken posted a superb final season in the cardinal and grey, as the graduate student capped her brilliant five years in Greensboro. Staking her claim to several single-season and career program records, she capped off her tenure with two of the best seasons in Guilford women's soccer history, starting 17 of her 18 appearances. This fall, the graduate student ranked second in the ODAC in goals against average, at 0.764, and third in save rate, at .859, with those marks also ranking 63rd and 37th nationally respectively. She went 10-5-2 on the season and completed nine clean sheets, the most in the ODAC at the conclusion of the regular season and currently ranking second in the league and 28th in Division-III women's soccer. Off the field, Franken holds an undergrad degree in Business Administration and is now advancing on her MBA at GC. Her undergrad GPA finished at 3.81 GPA, while she stands with a 3.86 GPA in the Guilford grad program. For her excellence on and off the pitch, she was selected as one of 132 players nationally to advance to the national ballot and be in the running for CSC Academic All-American honors, one of just four players in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) to move on with a chance at the distinction. The national ballot will factor in an athlete's academic and athletic achievement, in addition to their leadership on-and-off the pitch.

Berry anchored the Quakers' backline all season. Invaluable for her contributions both offensively and defensively, she completed the regular season as GC's leader among field players in minutes played with 1,506 having started in 18 of their 19 matches this fall. Defensively, Berry was the center back for a Quaker defense that conceded just 0.789 goals per game on the season, ranking second in the ODAC. Offensively, she initiated several set pieces throughout the fall for GC, resulting in two goals and two assists. Academically, Berry holds a 3.79 GPA in the Guilford Exercise & Sport Science program.

Muse was another crucial component of the GC backline, defending on primarily on the right side. She started in 18 of the team's 19 matches, playing 1,171 minutes on the season. She recorded one assist while attempting five shots, one of them on frame. Muse's biggest impact was on the defensive side where her contributions helped Guilford rank second in the ODAC and 28th in the nation with a .632 shutout percentage. Double-majoring in Biology and Health Sciences, Muse owns a 3.88 GPA.

Overton started all 17 games that she appeared in this fall for the Quakers, compiling a total of 997 minutes along the way. A defensive-minded midfielder, the junior distributed a pair of assists. She attempted seven shots with five of those on frame for GC. Thanks in part to her contributions, the Quaker defense allowed just 196 shots on the season, or 10.4 per game, but just 5.4 shots on frame per contest with opponents shooting just .076 on the year, an indication of a lot of weak, contested looks. In the classroom, Overton has a 3.94 GPA in the GC Exercise & Sport Science program.

Roaming the pitch as an offensive-focused midfielder, Rivera finished an all-conference worth season in her sophomore campaign. She finished tied for second on the Quakers with 15 points on the season, equally distributing her production between goals and assists with five apiece, reaching those numbers in 16 matches and 15 starts. She led Guilford with her assists total that ranked tied for 14th in the conference at the end of the regular season. Rivera netted one game-winner on the season, but anecdotally, she was just always around the ball, making an impact on the play constantly. Working towards a degree in Computing Technologies/Info Systems, she stands with a GPA of 3.79.

The Quakers' second-leading goal-scorer, Shotton was an outstanding striker for GC this fall, and was a big part of the team securing double-digit wins this season. Across 17 matches and 14 starts, playing 878 minutes in that span, Shotton's six goals scored were second on the team, pairing them with three assists to record 15 total points, standing even for second on the roster. Efficient with her attempts, Shotton's .641 shot on goal percentage was the best on the team among players attempting at least 1.0 shot per game. Progressing withing the Guilford Accounting program, she owns a GPA of 3.80.
