Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quakers Fall to Ranked Generals in Close Matchup

The Guilford Women's basketball team traveled to Lexington, Virginia to face off against #24 Washington and Lee University. The conference match was fierce till the very end when the Quakers fell by just four points, 80-76.

The game opened with Washington and Lee (13-1, 8-0) first tallying two points. This was followed by a scoreless two minutes for both teams. This changed as Courtney McMillan achieved four consecutive layups, before the Generals were able to add to their score. Once tied at multiple moments in the last three minutes, the Quakers (9-4, 4-3) were able to inch ahead, 18-16.

The second period was a tough one for the Quakers. Even though Carleigh Perry opened with a good layup, the Generals followed with a 10-0 run, thus taking a six-point lead, 26-20 (7:23). GC played catch-up for a bit, but was unable to reclaim their first quarter lead. W&L were ahead by six points at the halftime buzzer.

Guilford refused to back down in the third as they bested their opponent 28-21. The quarter was filled with three-point shots from multiple players including Anna Giannopoulou, McMillan, Zoe Bayer, and Amara Harrell. Once tied at 57, the two teams were neck and neck fighting for every point. After a free throw make by Harrell, Guilford was in the lead by just one point as the period came to an end, 61-60.

The fourth quarter was filled with excitement as Guilford stayed close, scorewise, to their ranked opponent. Bayer achieved another good three-pointer for her team. As the clock ticked away, the score became tied at 76. The Generals pulled ahead with two layups, leaving the Quakers to fall in the last two minutes (80-76).

Every point and play counted in this challenging matchup. McMillan was the star of the afternoon, leading her team with 16 points and eight rebounds. Additionally, Giannopoulou and Harrell both contributed a respectable 12 points each.

The Quakers are again on the road for their next match up against Shenandoah University on Wednesday, January 10. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
