Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Guilford Back in Win Column, Defeats Shenandoah

The Guilford College women's basketball team were again on the road for a matchup against conference rivals, Shenandoah University. Statistically going in as the underdogs, the Quakers persevered and claimed victory, 72-63.

GC (10-4, 5-3) struggled as the period opened, unable to get on the board, while Shenandoah (11-3, 6-1) went on a nine-point run. Finally, at 5:13, Taylor Dunn made a basket outside the arc. With about three minutes left on the clock, the Hornets led 16-8. At this moment, the Quaker offense caught fire, with baskets from Courtney McMillan, Amara Harrell, and Dunn. A three-pointer by McMillan put the Quakers in the lead, 17-16 (1:02).

The second quarter was close, scorewise, but the Quakers were able to maintain a consistent lead. At 4:35, GC acquired an 11-point lead over their opponent. However, the Hornets were able to make a slight comeback as they went on a six-point run. With just four seconds left in the half, Shenandoah made a three-pointer. Nevertheless, GC stayed ahead, 35-31.

The Quakers showed dominance in the third period, besting the Hornets by eight, 23-15. The opening five tallies were made by Anna Giannopoulou, including a three-pointer. Mid-period, the game became very fast-paced as the Quakers went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:16. Three-pointers were also made by Carleigh Perry and Ashtyn Zeigler, elevating GC to a lead of 59-46.

The last period opened with a three, yet again from Dunn. Overall, the fourth was GC's weakest performance, as the Hornets won the quarter (17-13). However, with the help of Guilford's early lead, they were able to keep their advantage, ending Shenandoah's undefeated conference win streak, 72-63.

Dunn was the leading scorer of the night with 16 points, along with Giannopoulou and McMillan both with 15. Giannopoulou and McMillan also led in rebounds with nine and eight, respectively.

The Quakers return home for their next matchup against Randolph College on Saturday, January 13. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
