Guilford Fights for Victory Against Hollins

The Guilford College women's basketball team battled it out against Hollins University in an evening home contest. The Quakers claimed victory, 64-61.

The first period opened with a jumper from GC's Carleigh Perry. Both Guilford (15-5, 10-4) and Hollins (7-13 2-12) offense remained successful in maneuvering the ball, with 7:51 on the clock, tied at 10. The next five minutes were quite low scoring as it became tied again at 12 with only 2:57 remaining. The Quakers ended the quarter with a 5-0 run, including a three-pointer by Zoe Bayer, 17-12. 

Guilford's first basket of the second quarter was not made until the 7:59 mark, again, a three-pointer by Bayer. This was the start of an 11-0 streak for the Quakers. Immediately, Hollins had a slight comeback, going on a 9-0 run. The half ended with a few deuces, resulting in a six point GC lead, 32-26.  

Coming back from the locker rooms, Ashtyn Zeigler opened with two baskets, followed by an exchange of layups from both squads. In this moment, things took a turn for the Quakers as Hollins then went on a 14-0 run, giving the opposing team the advantage, 42-36. Hollins' run was finally broken with a three-pointer by Taylor Dunn. Amongst all the struggle, the Quakers were able to catch up, and end the third, ahead by just one, 49-48.

It was anyone's game as the fourth was underway. The Quaker defense was locked in, as Hollins was unable to score until 4:09 on the clock, then scoring back-to-back three-pointers. 
Bayer replied from behind the arc with three points of her own. The rest of the match was intense till the last second, but GC came out on top, 64-61. 

Guilford's leading scorer of the night was Zoe Bayer, contributing an impressive 17 points. Carleigh Parry amassed 10 rebounds. Additionally, Amara Harrell had four steals. 

The Quakers next travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for their next matchup against Eastern Mennonite University. The game will take place on Saturday, February 3 and tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
