Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Zeigler Tips the Score in Last Second Win Against Shenandoah

The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled on the road to take on Eastern Mennonite University in an afternoon conference contest. Tied at 71 with less than 10 seconds on the clock, a corner buzzer-beater from Ashtyn Zeigler pushed the Quakers past the Royals, 74-71.

Guilford was first to put points on the board, a jumper by Amara Harrell and a layup by Courney McMillan. Then, the Quaker (16-5, 11-4) offense went quiet for the next three minutes. With 4:03 left on the clock, Ashtyn Zeigler layed one in the net for two, putting GC in the lead, 8-7. This lead was short lived as the Royals (9-12, 4-10) went on a 6-0 run, reclaiming their lead. The first quarter was deemed to be very low scoring for the Quakers, falling by seven, 19-12.

Things took a turn in GC's favor as the second period unfolded. With 8:50 on the clock, Zeigler made a three from behind the arc, followed by another from Zoe Bayer. These plays contributed to a 16-2 run for the Quakers, which greatly helped close the margin between squads. With four seconds left in the half, tied at 30, Anna Giannopoulou achieved a turnaround jumper, putting GC ahead by two before the buzzer, 32-30.

McMillan opened the third with a layup, but this was followed by an 8-0 run for the Royals. With 5:05 left on the clock, Briahna Scott layed one in the net, tying the score at 39. The teams continued to exchange the lead on multiple occasions. Bayer ended the third with a three-pointer, again tying it up at 49.

It was anyone's game as the fourth began, each team scoring almost identically for the first three minutes. However, at 6:05, Bayer scored from behind the arc. No baskets were made on either side until another three-pointer by GC's Markayla Massenburg at the 3:44 mark. With 17 seconds left, Giannopoulou tied the game at 71 and Zeigler put the Quakers over the edge with a game-point three, en route to a hard fought win, 74-71.

Bayer, McMillan, and Zeigler all earned double-digit points this afternoon, 18, 17, and 13, respectively. Carleigh Perry helped out with a double-digit number of rebounds, 10.

The Quakers remain on the road for their next matchup in Salem, Va. against Roanoke College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
