Women's Basketball Dismantles Cougars in 74-59 Rout

The Guilford College women's basketball team took on Averett University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup. The Quakers easily started the new year with a 74-59 win.

The Quakers (9-3, 4-2) had a solid start as the evening game began, opening with two free throws made by Anna Giannopoulou. Racking up a double-digit score, Guilford dominated 21-6 as the quarter came to an end.

Guilford's momentum continued into the second period, tallying a seven-point run with the help of a three-pointer by Ashtyn Zeigler. The Cougars (4-11, 2-5)  put up a good fight but were unable to catch up. As the halftime buzzer went off, the Quakers led 42-19.

The third period began with a back and forth exchange of points. However, the Quakers showed off with some three-pointers by Carleigh Perry and Taylor Dunn. With just one second left in the quarter, Markayla Massenburg was able to sneak in the paint with a quick layup, ending with a score 65-33.

Not Guilford's best performance, as the Cougars had their best offensive period in the fourth. The Quakers were only able to score four points in the first five minutes. Thus, Averett bested the Quakers, score-wise, 26-9. However, having a comfortable margin to start, Guilford claimed the overall victory by 15 points.

Credit owed to Perry with seven rebounds. Zeigler and Courtney McMillan were the big scorers of the night, racking up 11 points each for their team. Additionally, Amara Harrell, Giannopoulou, and Briahna Scott slid by with four steals each.

The Quakers will be on the road for their next matchup in Lexington, Virginia against Washington and Lee University on Sunday, January 7. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
