Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

GC Glides Past VWU, Third-Straight Conference Win

The Guilford College women's basketball team took on conference foe Virginia Wesleyan University in an evening matchup. The Quakers claimed victory by an impressive margin, 81-52.

The game opened with VWU (3-13, 1-9) scoring the first basket. For Guilford (12-4, 7-3), this energy was matched by a layup from Amara Harrell. Harrell carried this momentum into the next offensive possession, securing three more points. Ashtyn Zeigler also contributed three points with 1:32 left. Carleigh Perry layed one in the net for two with just 0.01 seconds left on the clock, giving the Quakers a 15-11 lead. 

Perry began the second quarter as she ended the first, tallying two on the board. The next two GC scores were three-pointers by Harrell and Taylor Dunn. The Marlins were able to get in some blocks and connect some shots, adding five points to their score. This was followed by a 6-0 run by Anna Giannopoulou alone, then a three-pointer from Markayla Massenburg with 3:12 left (32-20). GC ended the half with a 14-point lead, 38-24. 

The third period began with three free throws from Giannopoulou. With 7:12 left on the clock, Guilford went on a hot 13-1 run which included two layups from Courtney McMillan, two three-pointers from Dunn, and one three-pointer from Jael Hall (46-30). GC continued this momentum for the remainder of the quarter, with 11 seconds left, McMillan added three to the board. This extended the Quaker's advantage by 33, closing the third, 68-35. 

The Quakers entered the fourth quarter with an impressive lead. The first three minutes of the period featured great defense from both sides, with only one layup per team being scored. With 6:39 left on the clock, GC scored four consecutive layups tallying eight to their board. The game concluded with an exchange of free throws among both teams. The Marlins bested the Quakers in this final quarter, 17-13 but overall, GC dominated 81-52. 

McMillan led the night with 14 points. Additionally, Giannopoulou tallied 13 points and made 7-7 free-throws. Perry led with six rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. 

Guilford will be on the road for their next matchup against Bridgewater College on Saturday, January 20. Tip-off in Bridgewater, Virginia is scheduled for 2 p.m.
