Quakers Unable to Claim Victory Despite Strong Start

The Guilford College women's basketball team took on Bridgewater College in an afternoon ODAC conference matchup. What was deemed a strong start for the Quakers, unfolded not as expected, falling 70-63.

The first period opened in the paint with a layup by Ashtyn Zeigler. At 8:26, Anna Giannopoulou made an impressive three-pointer. The score was quiet for both teams during the next two minutes until GC (12-5, 7-4)  and BC (11-5, 7-3) went on a back to back exchange of layups. With 2:47 left on the clock, the score was tied at 11. Some fire kicked into the Guilford offense as they went on a 7-0 run, ending the quarter with the advantage, 18-11.

The next two quarters were similar, with Bridgewater besting the Quakers, 20-13 and 22-13, respectively. A highlight of the second quarter included a three-pointer by Zoe Bayer at 7:54, making the score 22-15 in GC's favor. With 1:31 left before the half, Bridgewater claimed the lead. With just eight seconds left, Giannopoulou was able to lay one in the net for two, tying the score at 31.

The second half opened in Bridgewater's favor. Again, the Quakers caught up, with the help of a three-pointer from Zeigler, tying the teams at 36. Between 3:16 to just one minute left in the third, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run, gaining a significant advantage over the Quakers. However, GC closed the third with a layup by both Carleigh Perry and Bayer, still behind 53-44.

The final quarter was quite the fight for the Quakers as they played catch-up for the remainder of the clock. Giannopoulou opened with a layup which was immediately matched by the Eagles. At 5:30, Tylor Dunn made a three-pointer which was again matched by Bridgewater moments later. Guilford's offense was strong, besting their opponent 19-17. However, this wasn't enough due to GC's mid-game performance, overall falling 70-63.

In today's matchup, Giannopoulou was the star of the show, leading her team with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists. Additionally, she led in efficiency (25.0) and usage percentage (31.44).

The Quakers will be on the road for their next matchup against Ferrum College on Wednesday, January 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Ferrum, Virginia.
