The Guilford College women's volleyball team welcomed the Averett University Cougars in what is the first of three-straight home matches. The Quakers fell to the visitors, 3-1.
Most of the sets were back and forth between the two squads. The first advantage in the opener was when Averett won seven out of nine points to go ahead 11-8. The Cougars held the edge until Guilford rattled off five-straight points to even it at 22. Following an exchanging of points, the Cougars won the final two points to take the set, 25-23.
In the second set, the Quakers jumped out to a 5-1 lead capped off by a
Kaci Johnson kill. Averett cut the deficit to a couple of points on multiple occasions but GC held the lead throughout and won the set, 25-18.
The third set had a slow start to it but then both sides used several runs to either tie or take the lead. With the set tied at 19, the Cougars scored five of the final six points for the 25-20 set win.
A seesaw affair kicked off the fourth set until a 5-1 run put the Quakers ahead, 8-6. Averett responded with a run of its own and led 18-15 later in the set. GC evened the set up but were not able to capture the lead. The visitors won the final three points to take the set (25-22) and the match (3-1).
Natalie Moore paced the team with 19 kills and three assists.
Maddi Page totaled 35 assists and 14 digs while
Amber Chiarolanzio and
Paige McDonald finished with double-digit digs, 15 and 13, respectively.
Guilford will face Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday, September 29 to kick off Homecoming Weekend. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
