Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Extends Quakers’ Unbeaten Start

The Guilford College women's soccer team made the short trip to face crosstown rival Greensboro College. The Quakers defeated the Pride, 1-0.

Within the first minute, the Quaker offense recorded a shot on target, in which Pride goalkeeper Sofia Pagnamenta saved. Six minutes later, midfielder Crystal Rivas sent a shot to the low right corner, saved again by the Greensboro shot stopper.

In the 15th minute, the game's first free kick presented Guilford's best offensive chance thus far. Defender Kylee Berry sent a shot to the top right corner, saved once more by Pagnamenta. This marked the Quaker's fifth shot of the game, the home side still without one.

The pressure continued on Pagnamenta, as a towering shot by Rivas forced her fifth save of the half in the 23rd minute. Ten minutes later, Rivas continued to press on Greensboro's defense, recording her third shot on target, and the team's seventh of the half. The Quakers almost broke the deadlock once more, as Gracie Meyer added a shot in the 37th, but was just wide to the right.

At the half, the game remained scoreless. The Guilford backline prevented any pressure from Greensboro, not allowing a single shot. Four yellow cards were issued in the first 45 minutes, split between the teams.

The second half began with another Guilford shot, in the 46th minute. Midfielder Andrea Cazares-Vasquez sent a shot from right outside the box, but straight to the Greensboro goalkeeper.

The 62nd minute marked another advantage for the Quakers; Pride forward Skylar Molnar's foul was upgraded from a yellow to red card, leaving the home team with 10 on the field for the remainder of the half. Mya Rivera's shot in the 66th marked Guilford's 11th of the game, but missed high.

Guilford's first shot in the penalty box came in the 75h minute, as a through ball for Rivera was brought away by Pagnamenta. Right after, Carmen Ellis kept applying pressure with the Quaker's 12th shot of the night, but to no avail.

In the 81st minute, Ellis tapped a through ball across the box from Baylee Greenwood into the net to break the scoreless tie, and gave the Quakers their fifth win in seven games.

The Guilford defense held Greensboro to zero shots. The Quaker attack attempted 14 shots, eight of those on target.

Guilford begins conference play as it travels to Winchester, Virginia on Saturday, September 23 to face Shenandoah. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
