Quakers Take Two From Maroons

The Guilford College softball team welcomed the Roanoke College Maroons for a conference doubleheader. The Quakers swept the visitors 5-4 and 7-3.

Game 1: Guilford 5, Roanoke 4

Following a scoreless first inning, the visitors got on the board as two runs scored on a single up the middle. Guilford responded when Morgan Kinney laid down a sacrifice bunt as Grace Calus scored from third.

Roanoke added two runs on three hits in the fourth to go ahead 4-1. In the fifth, Ally Morales doubled to right field to score Abbie Hill to pull the Quakers within two (4-2).

After neither squad scored in the sixth, it came down to the bottom of the seventh for GC. With runners on second and third, Morales singled up the middle to score Kassidy Lancos and Emma Patterson to even the score at four.

Morales advanced to third on a passed ball and following two intentional walks, Calus stepped up to the plate. Wasting little time, Calus singled to center field to walk it off for the Quakers, 5-4.

Alexis Lester picked up the win as she pitched four, shutout innings in relief, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

Game 2: Guilford 7, Roanoke 3

In game two, Guilford wasted little time as Morales lifted a three-run homer over the center field fence. Kaci Johnson drove in another run to give GC the 4-0 after the first.

The Maroons got on the board in the third with an RBI single. Roanoke pulled within one (4-3) as it scored two on a single to right field.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers hit its second three-run homer, this time off the bat of Johnson to increase the advantage to four (7-3).

Shiloh Gray held the visitors to one hit over the final two innings for the win and the sweep. Gray pitched all seven innings in the win, giving up three runs (all earned) on nine hits.

Guilford hits the road on Saturday, April 8 to face Eastern Mennonite University. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
