The Guilford College baseball team hit the road the face the Cougars of Averett University. Behind solid outing from
Jackson Marcellus and the the offense as a whole, the Quakers won 8-1.
In the opening inning, Isaiah Hariston singled to left field to bring home
Bryce Vestal for the early lead.
Michael Sumner doubled the lead in the second with an RBI single thorugh the right side.
Averett cut into the difference in the third with an RBI single. From that point, both pitching staffs settled in as both teams went down in order of the next two innings.
The Quakers looked to add to their edge in the sixth as
Carter Blum got things started as two runs scored on his double down the left field line.
Vestal followed with his own double down the other line as Blum scored. Later in the inning,
Rylan Smith launched a homer over the left center wall to go ahead by seven (8-1).
The combination of Marcellus and
Ty Clark held the hosts to just two hits over the final three innings for the win.
Marcellus (3-1) picked up the win, tossing seven innings while allowing one run (earned) on four hits and four strikeouts. Clark held the win with two scoreless innings, giving up a lone hit but striking out three.
Due to the inclement weather forecasted for this weekend, Guilford will now travel to the University of Mary Washington on Saturday, April 8 for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
