After rain forced the Guilford College baseball team move its home doubleheader to the road, the Quakers looked to take down Mary Washington. Guilford won both games by the score of 6-4.
Game 1: Guilford 6, Mary Washington 4
The hosts opened the scoring in the first inning as a run scored on an error. Guilford quickly responded in the top of the second when
Michael Sumner singled as
Carter Blum crossed home.
Neither team truly found offensive success until the top of the fourth when
Isaiah Hairston hit a three-run homer to push the Quakers ahead, 4-1.
In the seventh,
Nick Boles scored on a Sumner triple to put GC up by four (5-4). Mary Washington pulled within one with one swing of the bat with a three-run homer of its own.Â
Hairston delivered an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a single.
Jacob Phillips held the Eagles scoreless in the ninth to preserve the win.
Marcello Ricigliano started on the mound for the Quakers, going 6.2 innings with four runs (three earned) on eight hits and striking out three. Phillips was credited with the save, tossing the final 2.1 innings with no runs and only allowing two hits.
Game 2: Guilford 6, Mary Washington 4
Guilford wasted little time in game two to grab the early edge when
Rylan Smith doubled down the left field line.
Chase Wade followed with a sacrifice fly as Sumner tagged from third for the 2-0 lead.
UMW cut deficit in half in its half of the first with an RBI single. However,
Bryce Vestal expanded the lead back to two (3-1) with a double to score
Owen Smith.Â
The Eagles responded with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second to hold its first lead of the game, 4-3.
In the fourth, Vestal tied the game with a single to right field before Sumner gave the Quakers a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning,
Rylan Smith drove in Vestal with a double to right field.
At this point, the Guilford bullpen held the hosts scoreless over the next five innings to ensure the sweep.
Reese Baker picked up the win in relief while
Chase Wade earned his fifth save on the season.
Guilford will host Ferrum College in a conference showdown on Tuesday, April 11. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
