GC Holds On to Defeat Roanoke

The Guilford College baseball team challenged the Roanoke College Maroons on the road. After grasping an early lead, the Quakers held off the Maroons for the 10-7 victory.

In the opening inning, Isaiah Hairston got the scoring started for Guilford with a two-run home run over right center. Roanoke cut the difference to one with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the inning.

The Quakers expanded their lead in the third when Hairston and Rylan Smith drove in runs in back-to-back at-bats. Ahead 4-1, Guilford kept the momentum going when Carter Blum scored on an error. Michael Sumner followed as he drove in Nick Boles on a ground ball to go in front by five (6-1).

In the fifth, Grayson Tudor singled down the right field line to score two more runs. Later in the inning, Boles homered down the left field line as Blum was on base.

Guilford held the 10-1 advantage until the bottom of the sixth where the Maroons pulled within five with one swing of the bat.

The hosts were down five going to the bottom of the ninth when they added a run on an error. Two batters later, Roanoke added another run off an RBI double.

With the bases loaded, the Maroons looked primed to strike. However, Ty Clark shut them down with a strikeout to end the game, 10-7.

Jacob Ray picked up the win, pitching five innings with just three runs (two earned) on three hits and striking out three. Hariston went 3-5 from the plate with a homerun, three RBI and a run.

Guilford travels to the University of Lynchburg for the final doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday, April 29. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
