The Guilford College baseball team hit the road to face the sixth-ranked Lynchburg Hornets in the regular season finale. The Quakers fell in both games, 9-7 and 7-4.
Game 1: Lynchburg 9, Guilford 7
In the opening inning, Guilford struck first when
Isaiah Hairston doubled to left field to score
Bryce Vestal.
Rylan Smith followed with his own RBI double as GC went ahead 2-0.
The Quakers added two more runs in the second when Vestal singled to bring home
Nick Boles and
Carter Blum.
The hosts trailed by four until the bottom of the fifth when a solo homer to right field got them on the board. However, Guilford answered in the sixth with another Vestal RBI hit.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lynchburg came alive as it scored three runs on three hits including a two RBI double to left field.
Guilford expanded its lead when
Colin Smith drove in a run with an infield hit. GC led 6-4 going to the bottom half of the seventh.
The Hornets' bats stayed hot as they scored five runs on five hits to take their first lead of the game, 9-6.
The score remained that way until the top of the ninth when Hairston led the inning off with a solo home run to right. Lynchburg held on for the two-run win.
Marcello Ricigliano went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on six hits with two strikeouts in the no decision.
Game 2: Lynchburg 7, Guilford 4
Similar to game one, Guilford grabbed the early lead with a leadoff homer from Vestal. GC held the lead until the bottom of the second when the Hornets stole home after a runner on first got in a rundown.
Tied at one,
Owen Smith stole home as Vestal was got in a rundown between second and first as the Quakers went ahead 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, Blum scored on a fielder's choice as Vestal reached to put the visitors up by two (3-1). Guilford kept the momentum going in the sixth as
Jordan Burrough doubled to left center to bring home
Chase Wade.
Lynchburg's offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth as a bases clearing triple evened the game at four. The next at-bat, the Hornets took the lead with an RBI double.
The hosts added two more runs in the seventh go ahead by three, 7-4. Guilford's best chance at a rally came in the ninth when Bole tripled with one out. Unfortunately, the Quakers were not able to complete the rally and fell by the three-run difference.
Vestal finished the game with two hits, two RBI and a run.
Jacob Phillips went five full innings in the start, giving up one run (earned) on five hits.
Guilford awaits the seeding of the ODAC Tournament to find out its opponent in the postseason.Â
